I thought you guys might like to know what I found out about that beautiful red paint. I have mentioned before my friend and I are putting sidecars on CB's. My friend Mike is having his painted red on the top half and silver on the bottom half.
The red couldn't be matched by the best experts because it is so exotic. So, they had to order the paint from Honda (in NYC).
First Honda said they couldn't get it yet because it was too new in this country. Then they decided to cross check the paint code and found that the same color was used on the 2012 Goldwing (someone may need to know that sometime for touch-up).
The painter said he would need almost exactly one quart for the sidecar. Here's what gets me: The paint costs $240 a quart!

You can get a rattlecan of it made by ColorRite on for $33. Clearcoat is another thing entirely. They also sell touchup and units of paint. From the companies website it looks like it was used on a lot of models, but colors change, and this may be just a version of Candy Glory Red that Honda is using now. Color Code R101CU. I had it bookmarked because I was looking at painting the side covers myself. Have since decided to just buy a pair.
Yeah, its pretty pricy...

I think the R101CU is a better match. It was offered on the 08 ST1300 as candy glory red. If you compare photos of the CB and ST the color looks identical. Honda's website states the color as candy red.

They checked in to getting an exact match and the color was not the problem. They had the paint code and normally could easily match it. Mapping it from the paint code didn't get it. But, for touch-up, it's probably fine. It was the flakes in the paint that presented the problem. They could have gotten close, but not perfect. They wanted a perfect match. As large as the area of the sidecar is, they were not willing for close enough. It's one thing repainting a tank because you probably wouldn't notice but the tank right next to the sidecar would be very noticeable. I'm sure for doing a couple of side panels, the spray can could be OK.
Here's a thought: A bunch of us could go in together and paint a bunch of side panels and buy the good Honda paint.

Red is always expensive as it has the most pigment of any color paint.

They began painting the red on the sidecar last Friday. It is one of those paint colors that is requiring many coats because the pigment is "thin". The more coats go on, the darker it gets. But, it will sure be a great looking sidecar when it's finished. I hope to post pictures soon.
