Dirt/gravel roads

I have to admit I have a touch of CB1100 fever, I want one of the 2014 DLX models in a bad way. The reality of where I am moving involves some dirt and gravel roads. My house is about 4 miles from pavement.

I believe ANY motorcycle can be ridden on dirt roads with care. Certainly some are more suitable than others.

Any of you guys deal with dirt and/or gravel roads with any frequency? If so have you made any modifications to improve the CB1100 in that arena?

I KNOW there are better options out there, so please don't tell me what motorcycle I would be better off with in regards to dirt roads.

Gcarper and CB4ME ride dirt roads regularly. Gcarper has even put some videos up in the video section of the forum

Only about a half mile to pavement for me. I have a long front fender to stop the stones pinging of the header.

I have put about 1000kms of dirt and gravel on my CB, with another two hundred to come this month. The CB has a good upright seating position, it's easy to standup on the pegs, has good low down torque with smooth and controlled power from low RPM, engine braking, and "skinny" tyres. It all adds up to a reasonable bike for fair to good dirt/gravel roads and tracks. Just remember it's not MotoX. For photos see Seat Time - 2013 MotoGp thread with the links to DropBox.

Thanks guys. Anybody used the "Fenda Extenda"? The price seems reasonable, although on a $12k bike I wouldn't quibble over a few dollars if there is something better.

I have done about 300 miles of Forest Service gravel on my CB. It is very capable on gravel I had no fears. But the suspension on our CB's do NOT like washboard gravel. It got overwhelmed very quick like. Not enough travel. I just slowed down, stood on the pegs, weighted the front tire and that helped a bunch,,,,

I have one mile of a sand-clay mix road to the first pavement from my home and I find the CB very easy to ride on dirt compared to some other bikes I've had.

I have a Fenda Extenda. It works well and is inexpensive. I only ride on gravel on a friend's 200 yard driveway and the Extenda does keep the rocks off the engine pretty well. Most of the dirt too.

I believe that Ack has a long fender for sale if you want to go that way.

Good looking fender at a great price, but since I wouldn't be buying the bike until after my move this summer, it would be a bit like putting the cart before the horse
