Riding in groups?
#1
I used to ride with 5 or 6 guys in the early 80's when we were the only ones in town with sport bikes.
Now days, I'm almost always a solo rider, have had a few people at work and even a neighbor follow me home to ask if I wanted to ride with them someday, I usually politely decline.
Even on bicycles, it's part of my personality to ride solo...

Greatly depends on the group you are riding with. Often, the collective testosterone ends up taking you into the realm of dangerous and stupid. For that reason, I no longer tend to do the local club rides. However, a buddy or two that you have ridden with for years, and that are very experienced in doing so, are a lot of fun. Like the guy in the story above says, you just know and trust each other moves and intentions. But, for the most part, I ride alone as well.

We occasionally take part in charity group rides but ride well behind the main group and out of potential harms way. I do not trust riding in even a small group with people that I have no knowledge of their experience or level of caution.

I belong to a vintage motorcycle club and often ride with as many as 15 -20 (split into two groups) on a scheduled ride.
The average age is well above 50 and we're on old motorcycles so there are no pi**ing contests and have nothing to prove. We only ride back roads in a loose staggered formation and stick to the speed limits - which is rarely above 90 kph (54 mph).
I've been with this group for 19 years and we've never had an incident.
Most of us also ride modern bikes and sometimes a few of us will go for a day ride and stick to the same riding rules. Our newer bikes are much faster, but nobody is out for speed. I trust these guys because I know them well and, oddly enough, we often ride those same back roads Big Grin
I/we avoid huge groups like charity rides or poker runs where we don't know anyone or how they ride. Trust is a big issue.
But I also like riding alone and have no problem taking off for a day or a few days on the road by myself. In fact, in many cases, I prefer solo because I can go as fast or slow as I want and stop as often as I want.
I enjoy taking pictures on my rides and travels and all that stopping annoys some people so going solo is the best way.

I do one ride a year with a bunch of guys on a poker run. Always a kick, Harley riders make up the majority but they are there to ride, and they welcome anything on two wheels, even Burghmans! Great group. A few guys in my neighborhood own bikes, we go out for an evening run on a rare occasion, nothing big. I have ridden with guy's in the past that want to ride outlaw, play the biker, and those types I only ride once with, testosterone can get a guy hurt if not kept in check.

This type of riding really bothers me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcB4qntHZy0 as it does nothing but give other riders a bad name/image to try and get out of in other peoples (read non riders) minds.

I have no sympathy for those involved because this is the "riding culture" that they prescribe to. Unfortunately too many riders think like this now a days and it makes it difficult to have a large group ride sometimes.

I ride solo 95% of the time. I do have a few close friends that meet up Sunday's for breakfast once in a while. No shenanigans when we ride and always spaced well apart.

I always ride with a group. Never alone, not safe. If my wife is not along on her CB500X I still have the voices in my head. Don't laugh they are real, they told me so. Anyways, alone or with a group, have fun , ride safe, far, and often.
