Break in period
#21
300 miles for break in, but what rpm does it is say not to exceed? I pick mine up Saturday, and I'm planning my route.

Keeping it under 4000 appears to be the norm during break-in.

The modern consensus is, as far as I can tell, that the manual tells you not to be a hooligan with a new bike so you don't kill yourself and sue ("your honor, it says RIGHT IN THE MANUAL not to accelerate hard in the first 300 miles -- it's not our fault the plaintiff rode into the side of a mountain."). There's a whole lot of reasons why the "old" way of breaking engines in is no longer necessary.

Also, read this: http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

I didn't do anything to temper my use of this bike and mine runs perfectly with zero oil burn. Of course, as far as statistics goes, that means nothing to anyone but me.

Makes me feel a lot less guilty about getting on it during this time! But at 1000 miles now, 60% of my time on the bike was the alleged break-in period! Had to enjoy it sometime!

I was considering the period before the 600 mile maintenance to be the break-in; is it only 300 miles?

yep 300 miles. Same as with my CBR250R. I was a bit surprised. They must have improved manufacturing tolerances a whole lot to where less wear in is required ?

From the 2013 CB1100 Owner's manual, I guess even this can be interpreted a few different ways by those who ride and frequent forums.
"Break-In Period"
"During the first 300 miles of running, follow these guidelines to ensure your motorcycles future reliability and performance
- Avoid full throttle starts and rapid acceleration
- Avoid hard braking
- ride conservatively "

When I bought my new 2007 SV1000S Suzuki was very specific about not exceeding x rpms until you had x miles on the engine. There were three levels iirc... 6k, 8k, 10k, something along those lines.

Now Honda is not that specific for the CB1100. I changed the oil and filter at 375 miles, am now at 700 miles. Will change oil and filter at 750 miles. I've run the engine under full throttle to redline a few time. And I expect this engine to have a long and healthy life. If more was needed to correctly break in this engine, Honda would have provided additional information. After all, they don't want to deal with a lot of engine replacements under warranty.
