It was an oil based asphalt sealer. They use it quite a bit around AZ. Asphalt is sealed to keep the sun from drying out it's more volatile compounds. It keeps the asphalt from drying out and crumbling in the sun.

The sealer isn't slippery. It's actually kind of a gooey, tacky substance. Not dangerous to ride on, but you'll probably need a mild solvent to get the little black spots of sealer off your bike. I hate that stuff.

I haven't had a chance to check the bike for spots yet. I'm hoping I wasn't on it long enough for much accumulation. :crosses fingers:

I had the misfortune to ride on a road years ago that had been freshly sprayed with bitumen over a sandy base. It was night time so I didn't get a look at the bike until the morning. The whole front of the motor was about an inch deep in tar and 40 years later I can still see some of it stuck in the fins.

I had a quick look yesterday evening. Nothing on the headers that I could see, so probably got away clean.

You got lucky. With the heat around here, that stuff cures pretty quickly. If you have the misfortune of riding on it just after it's been sprayed, you'd need to stop at the parts store for an extra can of elbow grease and maybe one of these buttons to censor your language while you scrub :
