Hunting Season & Riding

Big game hunting is open in my area. With all the traffic in the woods deer are being flushed out into areas they normal don't go. I find this to be the worst time of the year for riding. Yesterday I had one pass in front and his partner pass just behind me. This was not in a rural area where I don't expect this kind of movement. The next few months I will ride in more urban areas than a normally would and my speed will decrease. Blood stains are all over the roadways the last few weeks here in Westchester County. Be careful guys.

yep, particularly dangerous at hours you don't expect them to be about crossing roads from 10 am until 4 pm. Heads up and ride safe

Many bears on the move here in NJ too. Near me, officials this past week killed five bears that showed no fear of humans in two adjoining state and county reservations. (Even though humans were in the bear's habitat, not the other way around)

Just yesterday a black bear walking through Morristown NJ climbed a tree on the town's center green. That was a strange one for me, for even though Morristown is surrounded by a rural area, the town center is a very active business district with several multi lane roads meeting there. Just driving through there rush hour is a real pain. This bear was tranquilized and safely removed.

The onset of the rut coinciding with the start of hunting season perhaps. The rut is on in my area and bucks are up moving around at all hours in pursuit of does resulting in many road kills. Our deer season starts in mid September and ends in mid January but usually there is little increase in daytime activity until the rut begins.

Remember, if you see a deer crossing there is probably one or more right behind.

Yeah, they're acting a little wacky...Today's paper... 3 miles from my house... a buck saw his reflection in a house window and thought it was another buck and tried to head butt it. The window bottom was 4 feet off the ground and he launched himself through and into the house and even ran upstairs. Needless to say, totally surprising the woman that was home. He then exited through the same window.

You write in jest. But it's a REAL problem - the population growth.

The natural predators of deer, mostly don't like Man being around in any proximity. Nor does Man like them around - because while venison is tasty, they're not above some two-legged fillets, either.

So...the predators are gone; and the deer do what deer do. And the numbers grow.

And lots of non-outdoorsy environmentalists think that's just so-oo cute...deer grazing on their front lawns. They think that, until they hit one in the dark. And have one go through the windshield, still kicking.

I grew up in the Cleveland area; and moved back as an adult for ten years ending in 2008 The Metroparks system is a greenbelt that surrounds the city, starting near the lakeshore on the east, moving south and west, and then again north to the lakeshore at Rocky River. Now this is beautiful land but it's JUST a greenbelt - in some places less than a hundred yards wide; in other places maybe a half-mile across or a little more.

Lots of ball diamonds and picnic areas for deer to graze. Lots of deer to graze there, too. And the deer were getting onto the Turnpike, the Interstates, and major through streets.

The park board and the county set up a plan that would have volunteer police sharpshooters cull the deer - with the harvested animals to be butchered in the county jail kitchen and the Brecksville VA foodservice kitchen. No waste. Minimal danger to the public. No trigger-happy goofballs shooting at anything moving.

The public outcry was incredible! There were actually hare-brains who wanted the park rangers to FEED BIRTH CONTROL PILLS to the deer. Can you imagine that? You have a problem; one with really only one solution; and people with more money than sense cannot stand to deal with the reality of wildlife management. And of where meat comes from.
