Portland IMS show
#1
I just returned from the Portland "International" motorcycle show. What a waste of time. Many of the major manufacturers including Honda, Yamaha, KTM, and others simply didn't show up. They sent local dealers to bring what didn't sell off of the showroom floor. Others like Triumph who did show up did not bring any of their newly announced models. This show has been in decline for many years and is now officially not worth going to anymore.

Other than a free beard trim and hair cut I agree it was a waste of time. There was a Honda rep there but he was useless, couldn't get a key ring out of them. Harley proved why they rule the roost. Superior salesmanship, something for everyone, hands on sit on take em for a test ride. Spent 4 hours trying to make it worth while but gave up. I could have went to Beaverton Honda and see more classic bikes, helmets, gloves, and gear along with bikes for sale. And Flo wasn't there.

That's unfortunate. I went last year to the Long Beach show and enjoyed it. All the manufacturers were represented along with the latest machines. I wonder if participating in all these shows is simply not worthwhile for manufacturers who understandably focus on the larger venues like Milan and Tokyo.

This year's show conflicts with my mother's birthday. I've been debating taking that Friday off and just going up for the first day. I'm leaning towards doing that and, if I do, I'll come back here and share my impressions.

Harley, Victory, Indian, BMW, and Ducati were well represented. Jap bikes not other than local shops

The manufacturers generally throw their marketing weight into the major market IMS shows; NYC, Long Beach, Chicago. Less so in other markets, where big dealers often step in with some mfr support.

Yeah, this. It's the same with the auto shows as well. If you haven't done it and have the means/interest these major shows are totally worth the trip.
