I can spot a Gold Wing and I can spot the BMW adv bike, but there are very few other bikes that I can ID from head-on. I can usually identify that a bike is a cruiser, sport bike, or sport tourer, but as to specific makes, I usually can't tell until I'm well past the waving point. I suppose I will get better at this as I ride more, but I am pretty sure that I'm fairly typical. Which means that the other rider probably doesn't know that I'm on a CB1100 until he's nearly next to me, which makes it hard for me to believe that he is singling me out for a wave (or lack thereof) just because of my bike.
Years ago I had a Suzuki Burgman 650. Now, that's a big touring scooter - actually a sort of hybrid. Step-through frame; but the engine is frame-mounted. Gas tank is up high, under the pillion seat; and the transmission had an interesting pivoting-enclosed-belt transmission.
It was actually a very-competent ride. If you ever get a chance to test-ride one, try it, you'd be surprised.
Anyway...head-on, it looked like a faired-in sportbike. Especially with the winged Givi windshield I had. I'd get the waves from crotch-rockets...and it was funny to watch their faces fall as I'd get on top of them and they saw what it REALLY was.

I try to wave at everyone on 2 or 3 wheels. But My experience is similar to Lone Ranger's. While out on the K 1600 it seems everyone waves, including the Harley riders. The CB 1100 gets very few waves from Harley riders. None unless I wave first. I long ago stopped caring whether or not someone waves, but it is interesting. Some bikes just seem to generate more respect than others. Does the CB maybe look a little like a scooter from a distance until you get close, and it's too late?

When I lived in NC, in a heavy military area, EVERY RIDER waved. Those that didn't had clearly not been around long enough. You waved because you knew that other guy was not only a fellow rider, but likely a fellow veteran and brother. Now, up here in the frozen he** hole, hardly anyone waves. It sucks. Heck, I get more waves from the farming equipment rolling down the roads than I do from other riders. Also, the no helmet thing is clearly a factor. It's ATGATT for me. Uncle Sam says so, plus I'm not an idiot. These guys see me in a leather jacket and a full face helmet in the summer though and I'm not cool enough to wave to. It's okay though, I'll keep waving at them and hoping they aren't the next one I read about that died from severe head trauma when the weather warms up again.
Stay safe everyone. Rubber side down at all times.

Thank you Nemo. I really like the US biker wave—left arm extended down. Can't do it here where we ride on the opposite side of the road.

Guess you Brits, Aussies, and Kiwis just have to waive the wave, 'cause otherwise you'd come unthrottled!

Most bike riders I see on the road wave and a lot of caters do too, I guess they are riders also. Some Pirates wave, some don't; I usually wave to everyone - no harm in being friendly.
In the mountains everyone, and I do mean everyone, waves. When I'm riding the Ural almost everyone waves and many give a thumbs up too. Once again, some Pirates ignore me - smart folks.
I always want to give the Pirates a bag of candy and compliment them on their outfit.
