The only difference between maps and my maps is the fact that "My Maps" is saved for you and easier to find again. Google maps are not easy to find without creating it all over again. However, if you create a shareable link, I have found google remembers them for a long time. You just have to save that link somewhere.
One thing I like better about the regular google maps is the ability to add way points by simply dragging the route where you want it to go. It will forget all of those way points any time you edit or add another stop though.
And if anyone is interested, you can download that spreadsheet and play with it off-line or copy it to your google drive to play with online.

Interesting, Kenny. I've known that you can easily save a link to maps you've planned in Google Maps and done it. You can also drag the route in My Maps to get it to go where you want. I've found with both versions, though, that sometimes the route will revert to where it decided to go in the first place and then cannot be changed. I've also found limitations on the number of way points in the normal Google Maps.

One shouldn't be ungrateful, really. They're both fantastic tools and they're free.

Google Maps is the standard maps application you find at maps.google.com or as an app on your phone. The Google Maps Engine is a slightly different beast more designed for drawing on maps. It uses the same map data, including the extensive user provided stuff. I find it more useful for drawing maps for reports as waypoints have been easier to deal with. I'll edit this post in a minute to post a link to it for you. Here: http://www.google.com/maps/d.
