I consider off road your trails, paths through fields (even double paths through fields can be in pretty good shape and not worthy of off road unless muddy). The days when most roads were unpaved are long over. So, I grew up on a farm in Kansas and the first vehicle I drove was a tractor. Our fields were certainly off road. Our roads were gravel, almost all of them except good old Hwy 50. I learned that patchwork by heart, never looked at a map and could navigate anywhere, even at night, just by remembering what turn went where. However, back in the days when motorcycles were ridden on unpaved roads, things were a bit different. In the early days of motoring, roads were often oiled and packed down, or they were completely impassable. Vehicles dripped and sprayed oil as they passed by, which was good for traction. The bikes handled better on loose surfaces because they had a low CG, the Harleys, Indians, and all the other brands that are now defunct. Now we have a prevailing idea that it's de rigueur to ride a 600-lb motorcycle "off road", which is defined as anything but smooth pavement. All these advertisements for adventure bikes showing guys pitching it sideways on the Africa Twin and monster GSs are just bunk, the rider often crashed seconds after the photo was snapped! A big top-heavy bike like the CB1100 is not going to fare well on loose surfaces, call it what we like. Best just to avoid that stuff as the thread shows.

These pictures were taken on a dirt road in Colorado. I was able to travel between 20 and 45 MPH on this road workout issue. However, it was a very nice dirt /gravel road.

I've been on the Bumble Bee with the 650. Doable in the CB, but it would not be fun. Once you to the Bumble Bee exit (the leader road to I-17 is super fun, very twistie and a hoot on the big dirt bike) the road is much better. But the stretch south to Black Canyon City; I'd rather have a quad.
I have not ridden on a trail even with the dual sport bike. No skill sets to do so. ![]() That dirt road pictured above is in very good shape - spurts to 70 would be very doable. I had the Griso on a dirt road out side Datil New Mexico last year that was not nearly that good. The Griso does good in the dirt! Thinking about taking the CB this year. If the scenery is good, go for it. These bikes can do a lot more than you give them credit for. I do want to add that road conditions and your willingness to take them are up to you and how you feel about your skill set. There are areas I don't feel comfortable with and leave that to the guys that have the skills to handle.

Off road for me these days means pulling into a restaurant parking lot that might have a few pot holes in it you can ride around, although I would certainly give the road in Kennys pictures a run.
