Over the weekend just past a thread was deleted at the request of the original poster. He had asked that people not respond in a particular way to the subject he was posting about. Of course they did and he was upset by it.
The incident prompts me to say this: while members are entitled to ask that others do not respond to a thread or post in a particular way, there's no guarantee they won't. Neither Ferret nor I will modify or delete posts that don't comply with an OP's request, unless they are offensive in some way. In this context 'offensive' covers the very modest gamut of forum sins.
I know it's a statement of the bleeding obvious, but this is a forum on the internet. It's open to all comers prepared to comply with the very few rules imposed. Unlike many other forums there's no tolerance for rudeness, belligerence or what I believe is called 'flaming'. That said, discussion and respectful disagreement is encouraged because, often, it not only keeps the forum moving along but is also interesting.
So, by all means ask, but be prepared to be ignored. If that isn't going to work for you, maybe consider whether you want to post on that topic?
On the other side of that equation, if you want to ignore an OP's request for a particular kind of response, maybe think about starting another thread taking up the issue in broader terms?
I'll now pop off and don my asbestos suit.
