Progressive glasses and riding
#21
I went to the eye doc to get new glasses yesterday. Haven't been in a long time and my left eye is blurry. He said I have a bad cataract he usually only sees in 3rd world countries. And one just starting in my right eye. So now I'll be getting cataract surgery. But, I'll get new glasses after that! Woo Hoo!

And yes I got chewed out for waiting so long. Getting old is starting to suck.

With any luck LPG, maybe he'll get it wrong and you won't need any prescription glasses to see after the operation.

I am seeing more and more of these instances these days from people in their 80s. Some wear eyewear frames (no lenses) simply out of habit. Weird to see (no pun intended).

He did tell me they could actually put different lenses in but most (or a lot) of people just get the focus from 8' to forever and then contacts or glasses for close in. I like glasses so will still have them when done. Unfortunately it will be August before it happens. I guess a lot of people have cataracts!

I have since found out that bifocals are not good for computer use 'cause i have to tilt my head back to get the bottom focal in place, so I've gone to #3 for that. I don't want contacts. My daughter tried them, but decided she doesn't like them, too much hassle. And you're right, this getting old just sucks! I have noticed that when I meet people (moved from CA to TX last August), we'll be chatting, and they'll ask me, "How old are you?" When I tell them, they're very surprised and comment that I look ten years younger than what I am! I'll take that, but it makes me wonder, do they ask themselves "Do I want this old fart out on my boat with me?" or "Do I want to ride with this old dude, what if he conks out while we're riding?"

Progressives help me read the instrument panel (truck or bike) at night; but I don't seem to ride or drive that much at night (I don't meet the standard in AZ that would demand I wear glasses so at night sometimes I choose to not wear them at all; and I can see the instruments just fine).

Progressives: I like 'em. Works well for me and the transition was quick. However; I find that data point pretty useless as we're all different and as some of you have found out you may hate them. We have choices - take what works for you.

I was slow on the uptake with some Zenni eye glass orders and ended up with several pair with no progressive option at all. I find that I can read things in the truck better without the glasses than with them. 99% of the time I'm wearing sunglasses and use the sunglass part more than the corrective vision bit - that said, I do prefer prescription sunglasses to non-prescrition so there must be some benefit. Big Grin

By the way, bi-focals make you look old.... :poke:

All my sunglasses are prescripts, so never out-of-range to grab a set - even for night riding.

I have noticed a strange phenomenon, that while riding, I feel twenty years younger! My knees don't hurt, and my vision is sharp and clear! If I could bring the CB into the bedroom, I'd have a triumvirate of feel-good going on!

I can relate. Many times any headaches going on go away too!

ROFL
This reminds me of the legendary "Old Dude" many years ago when Goldwings were a new and wonderful thing, who stopped his Wing at the stoplight, and, as he sat waiting, slowly tipped the bike over to the ground and died. What a way to go.
