Rear Turn signals
#1
For the purpose of mounting soft saddlebags I have deiced to mount a set of temporary rear signals that will only be used for trips. My plan is as follows.

1. Create a connection, using OEM Honda connectors, under the seat so that the stock signals can be unplugged without the pain of getting down to the battery box.

2. Mount some light weight aftermarket signals to the licence plate bracket in place of the red reflectors.

3. finish them with OEM Honda connectors that will plug in in place of the stock units.

I will not try and do the wiring in the channel under the seat but will merely run them externally up the fender and under the seat. Given that they will only be on a couple of times a year this seems easiest.

Does anyone see an issue or potential problem with this? Finally how the heck do I get the stock signals off? Do I need to take the side brackets with turn signals still mounted and then remove the signals from the backside?

Why not just permanently relocate the blinkers to mount on the fender? I believe that is what others do to make room for luggage. You do need to remove the grab rails in order to remove the stock blinkers. You can then put the grab rails back on.

Only because I like the look of where they are and I am not sure if the licence bracket is capable of taking the stock ones.

I understand that turn signals are placed high so car drivers can see them over the hood and wide so they can see it is a turn signal.

I doubt you would get ticketed for altering the height and width of the signal lights, but you might punted across a busy intersection by some distracted driver.

The other day I was following a biker that no signal lights. He used a hand signal. Something I had not seen for decades, so I had no idea which way he was going to turn.

I belong to a vintage motorcycle club that was established in 1979 and we've been using hand signals since then and before signals lights became standard.
Using the correct hand signals in the correct way makes it very clear to drivers what the intended action is going to be.
Improper hand signals certainly can confuse drivers, no doubt about that.

I know that Japanese motorcycles had signal lights in the 1960's.
The British just before their bikes became extinct.
Cars had signal lights before that.
Bicyclists are suppose to signal, but they don't bother.
So it's been almost half a century without hand signals.

I doubt that younger drivers know what they mean, except the finger.
Those of us that old enough to know, don't remember.

I use the hand signals for left and right turns quite often, along with my turn signals.

I also use the slow down signal (like hand swatting up and down) to warn oncoming riders of police shooting radar, but nobody on a crotch rocket knows what I mean, they just think I'm waving lol

I'm old enough to remember hand signals, but I wouldn't know what any of them except stop, right turn and slow down mean any more. Down under, riders tend to point at the sky with their left hand and make a circular motion to signify police ahead. It imitates the action of a circular light, apparently.

People here use to flash their headlights on to warn you of a patrol car. But now in Canada all cars must have daytime running lights on. So you don't know if they are just going over a bump or warning you of a speed trap.

I often got flashed on my CB500XA. I never saw a patrol car, so I wondered if my headlight was not adjusted properly. Or maybe they were just bikers in cars flashing hello.

I never got flashed on my CB1100 EX. Which made me wonder if the LED daytime running light was not being seen by drivers. I started to run my high beam on the highway during the daytime. So far only one BMW has flashed to let me know my high beam was on.

When we wanted to signal a cop was ahead, we would touch the top of our head/helmet. I still use hand signals for turning.
