Preaching to the choir...
#1
I know this isn't exactly news to any of you, but i had a few moments during a five day, 2,000 mi road trip through the Pacific NW where I really appreciated how purposely built the CB is to manage real road challenges gracefully.

Whether open road cruising, passing long lines of cars or keeping up with a quick Ducati on highway 20's many curves, I was never disappointed with how well the bike responded to inputs. True, it's not a track bike, but a beautiful machine that can be pushed quite aggressively on good rubber. I can't speak highly enough of my CB, especially after comparing to my buddy's FI Bonneville, which was fun, but felt kinda loose.

Of course there are special touring bikes, sport tourers and so on. To me the CB is all in one. Proofed on 2 longer trips. Just mounted a windshield, crashbars, highway pegs , saddlebags and some more bags, the CB is a good tourer. Strong enough, relieable, a strong frame, the tour can start. A shaft drive would be nice, but it's the way it is, an oiled way. I'm a member in the choir of CB owners who ride tours with this motorbike, also longer ones. Some other more specialist bikes may offer a better comfort, but they don't look nearly as good as the beautiful CB. Too much plastic, a hidden, mostly watercooled unpersonal engine, which don't trigger the heart through the eyes. On tour I for my part will enjoy to endlessly look at a bike as much as I enjoy to ride with it. This is part of the game and set some eneregy free in me. Some very positive. At least every bike can be everything in its own way. It depends on what you make out them and what you expect. The Honda doesn't need much adjustments to be a fine tour commuter.

I agree that the CB1100 is a good all around bike. It takes me back to when that was the sort of thing that all the motorcycle manufacturers wanted to make. You could pick your new UJM in whatever displacement you fancied, if you wanted to tour you bought a windjammer fairing and some hard bags. You could dress it up like a cafe racer. You could leave it stock, use it as a commuter. I miss those days. The whole 70's through early 80's was, in my opinion, the golden age of motorcycles. Then everything started getting wrapped in plastic and overspecialized. I know, brakes, tires and suspension have all gotten better and that does make bikes safer today. I'm glad that Honda chose to make this bike. I think they got it right. Honda captured the feel and spirit of their best days while throwing in much better brakes and a good fuel injection system. 40 plus years on two wheels and a lot of bikes under me, and I am convinced this is my best bike purchase to date.

Bingo! The classic UJM was whatever kind of bike you wanted to make it. This is what appealed to me back then and still does today. I don't have enough space in my garage to have a specialized bike for every type of riding. I need a general purpose bike that can do it all and the CB is it.
