My CB is something I bought for it's beauty and heritage. Resale value was never a consideration. If I did have to sell it I would suffer the loss with no regrets as I've gotten my money's worth in pleasure out of it. Hope I have at least a few more riding years left to enjoy it.

VISCERAL: based on deep feeling and emotional reactions rather than on reason or thought. I don't remember which forum member used the word, but it stuck with me.
I have owned over a dozen motorcycles in my life time. All except one were bought on riding needs and looks, never costs. After seeing the 2014 Deluxe, I waited 3 years until the 2017 EX was available in Canada. As I made the dealer aware of what I wanted in January there was no haggling on the price. They did add an additional $500 for their prep, so I asked $500 more for my trade in.
You have already made you mind up that you want a CB1100. As they are all the same motor and frame, the only choice left is looks. Don't be swayed by your son. It's not his motorcycle and he's not paying for it.

Thanks for the on-going discussion and great comments. It is true that only I can make the decision. But you all have made several comments that have helped shape and prioritize my thinking. I definitely like the 2013, 2014 Deluxe and 2017 best for looks so while the new 2014 standard blacked out is a great deal, it is not what I am looking for.
I may very well end up with the 2017 since it really seems to be what I want and for a few thousand more spread over several years, it is not much per smile or per mile.
I think I will have plenty of time to find a good 2017 and I am enjoying the bikes I have so I am in no rush. If one of the bikes I am looking at gets sold, no big deal, there are plenty around.
I may make a bargain offer on the 2013, they probably won't take, but maybe they will get desperate to sell it. I think I am going to work on selling the Harley and the Versys to make room in the garage and pick up a CB1100 when I find the bike and deal that speaks to me.

i have a feeling prices will get back to normal once all the 14's are no longer available, the dealers may also bet on that.

but that assumes there won't be a surplus of new 17's floating around the market for the next 4 years. do we know any numbers on the 17's? did they produce as many as they did for '14?

Same motor/ guts for sure...but the 2017EX is more polished, taken to the nth degree. In evolutionary terms, the 2014 is the bonobo and the 2017 is the human. Ha!!

I have a quote for a new 2017 for $12K out the door including tax, tag, title and dealer fee. That is about a $2K discount from MSRP. Seems like a pretty good deal.
Now, I am looking at 2013 with 12K miles for $5,500, 2014 Deluxe with 1,800 miles for $7,500 or 2017 new for $12K. Hmmmm……. I think I can get about $4K for Harley and about $4K for Versys. Say somewhere between $7K and $9K for both. So net $3 to $5K out of pocket. But down to one bike to insure and one to maintain. I am probably dollars ahead in a couple years.
Think Mrs. Sorg will buy that? I am sure she will be highly skeptical until the Versys and Harley have actually been sold.

Tell your wife that you do not spend money on a new bike , you are investing in a new bike......
