After multiple communications with Lucas at thetankslapper.biz, and after giving me some hope at first, Lucas has concluded that he won't be offering a paint protection pre-cut kit for the 2017 EX. There is not a bike available near him to use as a pattern, and his dealer says he will not be getting one unless it is ordered for a customer. So I am thinking of just buying some xpel film and making my own, though there is no doubt a die-cut set would be nicer. I am also considering having the entire tank wrapped, which would make the use of my magnetic tank bag less worrisome. I am wondering if anyone here has had a full wrap done and if it was able to be done with a single sheet of film?
Also, Lucas' cell number is in the 760 area code, which is in California. Is there anyone with a 2017 EX that might be willing to swing by his shop and let him measure your tank? If yes, I can call him to see if he is interested and to find out exactly where he is. Just an idea....

Not really the answer you are looking for but it sort of is....I have just put on a Bagster tank cover this afternoon. These are made in France (I believe) but are sold through a number of places. I used ebay. Anyhow, I was thinking how best to protect the tank sides from scuffs etc and considered wraps or adhesive rubber knee pads but I was a bit concerned about it 1) looking naff and 2) knackering the paint with the adhesive. This cover does fit very well, took about an hour to fit with a bit of faffing about. Only negative is that I can't see the lovely metallic finish anymore. Makes carrying a tank bag mega easy though. I have piece of mind the tank will be mint underneath. Just another option for you perhaps? Kind regards john

I did not cover the entire tank, but cut strategic pieces from some clear paint protection film from Snider's:

I like it because it's clear, seems to protect the paint well, and adheres by static. It is easily peeled off.

Kinda depends on what you want to achieve, and with what look. A while back I posted about TechSpec die cut tank pad 3 peice sets for 2017 Cb1100s. http://cb1100forum.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=12295 . In reading the reviews, I was impressed, particularly with the release an re-position self adhesive they use, that will not harm paint finishes. I have been considering this set for a while, and in your case, you could pre-cut a piece of clear wrap, or the Sniders Paint covering cookiemech just posted about to put on the tank top to protect the paint when using your tank bag.
The Bagster cover Jfro5687 posted is another option. It reminds me of the vinyl car front end bras that were popular back in the 80s. If you go that route, just be aware that if it gets rained on, dont let it dry on the bike, as it will fog the paint, just as car bras did. Otherwise a good option.
Shops that apply wraps or film are called glaziers. I have watched shops do wraps, and unless the material is pre cut to size and shape, they cut it on the vehicle. Personally I would never let anyone cut wrap or film on my vehicle, as I dont want to chance cutting into the paint. That said, if the application is pre-cut, they generally have so much practice with compound curves and application, that the end result will usually be free of air bubbles, and/or wrinkles.

Thank you for your post. I had seen this on Twisted Throttle (where I have already spent lots of money on my 2017 EX), but any die cut product that originally was cut to fit a pre-2017, will be ill-fitting on the 2017 with the new tank shape. That is pretty evident in the picture on the Twisted Throttle website. I think I will will swing by a local shop that applies PPF and see what their tech has to say about the possibility of wrapping the tank with a single sheet of xpel or 3M film.

Not that this is terribly relevant, but I wanted to make sure that my tankbag did not touch the paint, so I bought an SW Motech bag that snaps onto a tankring:

I bought some 3M film for my tank (2014), but honestly, it was real pain to try to install. Made my own templates from paper, drew them out, cut to size, then transferred the template over to the film and cut that out. All of that went just fine - but then peeling the film while attempting to lay each piece down "bubble free" was where I had some trouble.
In the end, I did only about half the job I had planned to do, realizing that it wasn't going to go down well with my lack of film experience. There is enough coverage however to deal with the tank bag / magnetic base pieces (I think). Not totally unhappy with the job, but not entirely satisfied with it either. The film however, is doing its job.

I just did my fender with 3M film. I have seen that doing a tank with one piece of film is very challenging, plenty of pros on YouTube with videos on it to back that up.
If you get a quote for wrapping a tank, let us know in this thread what that quote is? I’m curious. I was quoted over $300 to wrap my front and year fenders. Thought that sounded a little excessive.

I paid $30 to have my 2013 tank professionally wrapped.
Installer even came to my place of employment to do it.
He cut/fit three pieces.
Bring your bike to Tacoma and maybe he will do yours!
Although this was done 4 years ago.
So there's that...

Kind regards john I bought that same Bagster cover from a member for $145 and it was best money I've ever spent. The gas tank and paint still factory new underneath and I can re sell it after if needed.
Have you tried looking for a tank bag that works with the clips system? I'm having trouble distinguishing between Bagster mounting options
