Value of a damaged Alpine Star leather jacket?

My neighbor laid his R1 down a few years ago. I was showing him my new ride and he asked what kind of gear I had and I said only warm weather stuff right now. He offered me his damaged Alpine Star leather jacket and said make an offer. It has back, elbow and shoulder pads.

Damage: It has a rip in the front, hole in 1st layer on Right elbow, damaged snaps on left side and no liner.

He said it was over $400 new, but My gut reaction is maybe $40.

Or should I just steer clear of damaged goods? Thoughts on price I should offer if anything?

Used and damaged…I would not offer much. I myself would tend to shy away from damaged stuff….be it diving gear or biking gear.

You can go to Leatherup.com or motorcyclegear.com and get good deals on new gear and motorcyclegear.com also has a used section..not crashed..just used.

I didn't get the details on how he went down, but yeah, all in the right side. The jacket is serviceable and has some character, but my concern is that the holes become snag points if I go down, so I'd have to get them patched. Going for function, not look on this one until I can decide what kind if leather I really want.

I would tend to agree, unless it was my own gear. Then I tend to hold on to things I know saved me.

Track riders frequently damage their leathers, and there are numerous shops that repair them. If you really like the jacket and can get it at the right price, go for it. You can send the photo to the repair shops for an estimate ($200 is probably close). Expect at least two weeks for repair.

I say the other guy ground out the evil spirits for you.

Howzit fit you? To me, fit matters a lot for comfort and for having the armor in the right place if it's ever needed.

It fits perfect, paid the guy $60, and I'll have it patched up for another $40-$50 and have a good cold weather jacket. It's still cheaper than I've seen them go for on eBay. It has armor in elbow shoulders and back. Better than some if the new leather jackets that only have padding and no armor.

I only need it a few months out of the year and I'll switch to my Joe Rocket Phoenix jacket, so no point in paying new prices.
