CB1100 engine
#1
Just out of curiosity is the CB1100 engine in any way related the the CBR 1100 (blackbird) engine? I know one is air cooled and no doubt the Blackbird is water cooled.

I believe our engine in the cb1100 was made specifically for the cb1100. ..the original engineers were sent to the museum/factory in Japan to study how the original bikes looked and all when they designed the new Gen cb1100s from the ground up.

I'm sure someone else will verify/correct me

Interesting pedigree for the cb1100 but as a big fan of the cb1300 series i could not help noticing some similarities between the engines such as;
the shape of the clutch housing cover, ignition cover and bolt pattern, front engine mounting, angle of the cylinders and the starter assembly on the left hand side of the bikes.

Could be they decided to use the very strong cb1300 block as a base.

Certainly the air cooled cylinders and head are the most attractive i've seen on any bike;

All in all I just dony understand why they didn't get put more power in these bikes. The CBs were the first "sport bikes" back in the day known for power.

Idk why they settled for the 80hp or w.e these bikes make stock.

When I see an inline 4 liter bike I think of 100+ hp.

Doesn't need to be a Supersport by any means but the bike has always came off as neutered to me.

The CB 1100 was a clean sheet of paper design with no horsepower specified, only in that it was to be a bike that was pleasant to ride. Personally, I think they achieved the goal wonderfully. I love just going out and riding my CB 1100. Even if they had made it 100 hp that wouldn't have been enough. People would have said the 1983 1100 made more power than that, 27 years earlier. 125 hp? Still not enough to compete with Ninja 1000's, Yamaha MT-10s, BMW S1000's, Suzuki GSXR's,

The Suzuki Bandit 1200 got panned by the press and consumer for only producing 100 hp, even though it was a great bike, because the competition was making 125-150.

Honda has had the reputation for years of building perfectly wonderful bikes with less hp than their competition. It's why Hondas are often reported as being boring.

So funny you say that because as I was laying in acupuncture thinking about my previous comment I was thinking about my buddies Suzuki Bandit and how I wish ny CB was more like that bike in the power/high speed stability category.

I always wanted to add a Bandit to my collection

Can't agree more. A very clean and tidy inline-4 air-cooled design.

They could only go so far to meet Euro regs. A water-cooled engine can have closer tolerances and higher compression ratios. More CR more efficiency, torque and therefore power. The new BMW R18 1802cc which has pushrod valve actuation only makes 91HP, 2 more than the CB. It comes from 116 lbs-ft of Torque. That torque figure is quite low for an 1800cc motor but loads more than the CB. Our CB gets its power from the increased revs the engine can handle. Power = (2*Pi x N x T)/60 N= revs per min.

Either way these bikes were built as heritage plays but I think Honda got the marketing wrong. I think a lot of people have bought the CB1100 and sold them on very quickly as they didn't really know what they were buying. I think the RS looks great but gives the wrong impression. I think Honda would of sold a lot more had they gone the CB750 look, a full retro. Like Triumph have, first with air-cooled and now water-cooled bikes.

That CB1300 is a nice looking bike, too bad it isn't coming to the U.S.
