Who here is an Adventure motorcyclist
#41
I got to try calamari at a small port town in Oregon a couple years back in a Chinese dish. It was OK. Just weird.

I'm known to be a picky eater so my wife was shocked. I'm still a picky eater but expanding my horizons just a wee bit. I'm usually don't avoid small mom & pop joints (rarely a bad one, but this is out west Smile ). But I can be fond of Denny's for the exact reasons Ferret is. There are times when you want comfort food and Denny's, AJ's, Perkins etc. provide that.

Although calamari (or squid) and octopus are similar in texture, you don't get the thick tentacles with the suction cups with the calamari. The calamari is most often served as round bands, as it is the body of the calamari that has been sliced, whereas the octopus it is the tentacles that are sliced.

Calamari/squid is very common in Asian dishes, and one of my favourites is ginger squid as they make it in South East Asia.

Here is a lovely dish from north of Spain, pulpo gallega. Sliced octopus tentacles are cooked, and then sliced and served with olive oil and salt. Delicious!!

Henrik I looked at that picture and my body did an involuntary revulsion shake. I could never be an Adventure rider if I had to eat stuff like that. I want a cheeseburger lol

You don't know what you are missing out on! Seriously, even if it may look strange, octopus is really not a very strange taste, and if properly prepared it is very pleasant to eat. If not well prepared it will be chewy though, which I can see will turn off a few people.

You could try it as a carpaccio, very thin slices. That way it doesn't look strange.

On my first date with the woman who is now my wife, we met for appetizers and a drink at a fancy bar overlooking the downtown skyline and bay. I thought I'd impress her with my sophisticated palate so I ordered a plate of calamari and nice bottle of wine. I found them delicious and it seemed she did too. The conversation came easily, we laughed a lot, and, in my mind at least, everything went perfectly.

It wasn't until we had been dating for a few months that she admitted to me that she DESPISES calamari but didn't want to appear rude or finicky so she pretended to enjoy it and struggled through every bite! We had a good laugh about that and I promised her that I'd never expect her to eat anything else she didn't like. Seeing calamari on a menu always brings back good memories and a laugh.

At this point, getting her to try a bite of octopus would take an act of God. I imagine she would sit on the same side of the table as the ferret if we were to all go to dinner.
