Wasn't enthused about it at all (not because of her) but because I see all the distracted drivers when I'm riding. It was inevitable so we had her take the Motorcycle Safety Course given by the local Harley dealer. Two upsides are she likes to wear her safety gear and likes to ride with her father and his friends so a lot of times she's with me and I can keep an eye on her.
I had a nice talk with my son yesterday about riding and did my best not to preach the dangers of riding but to just have an open and honest discussion about them. He really has given this a lot of thought and is busy learning as much as he can about riding technique, proper gear, etc. I bought him a copy of Hough's Proficient Motorcycling and some day soon, we'll start riding together. I'm looking forward to it.

My son is seriously considering a Kawasaki Ninja 300. It seems like a nice bike to start on. I've always been a fan of Kawasaki and have owned a Vulcan 900, a Ninja 650 and a Ninja ZX6R; all of which I thoroughly enjoyed riding.
I'm also a fan of that new 300. Too bad it wasn't available in 2012 when my son got his m/c endorsement. I bought him a 2012 CBR250R in red/white/blue w/ ABS. He rode that bike for 3 yrs commuting to school & college b/f recently selling it. These small sport bikes make very good learner bikes.
My son is now thinking of picking up a used 500. He's concerned with growing out of a 300 too soon. I understand the concern even if I don't necessarily agree with it. Besides, I imagine the new 300s perform just as well as an older, used 500, if not better. I hope he goes for the 300 and I'm excited to try it out!

When my friends (and lifelong riding companion) mother was losing the battle with cancer I spent a bit of time with her. Good lady with wicked sense of humor. She was laughing, and pleased, that my friend had a son "who was just like him growing up".
Thanks! I'm embracing it and now going to do everything I can to help my son be a competent, safe rider. That's really special that you spent time with your friend's mom under those circumstances. I hope my mom shares her reaction to my son becoming a motorcyclist.

While she's living in another town, sometimes we meet and go out for a ride together, which is always fun.
She really enjoys riding, as you can see at the big grin on her face:
Your daughter has a beautiful smile Django! Haha.

Thanks quietguy! My son takes the written test today at the DMV and, assuming he passes, will officially have his M1 certification added to his license.

My 12yo son has been asking to ride with me more often, and I have little doubt the moto bug will bite him if it hasn't already. I share the same concerns as the OP, but I intend to guide him as best I can should he make the choice to ride when the time comes.

You ever ride off road Rob? I wish I would have gotten my boys (and myself) on the dirt at an early age. I've lived within an hour of the desert for most of my life and have never taken advantage of it. It would be great to take your son out and see how he does on a small displacement dirt bike. Even though my boys are now young men, I'm going to plan a trip for all of us to head out, get some instruction, and rent some off road bikes.

No, never been off road but that does sound like fun. Being in So Cal, nothing is too far away.

Great way to introduce kids to motorsports! I started my twin sons that way when they were about 14 and today they are very responsible 32 year old street riders with many miles of fun under their belt.

My son is currently looking at a 2014 Ninja 300 with ABS with only 3000 miles on the odometer. It's listed at $4100. When I say currently, he's at the dealership right now. I think this may be his new bike. Stay tuned...

Excellent choice! While it's still a relatively light and forgiving bike, the little Ninja has the guts to hold its own on the interstate. Not something he'll outgrow in a few months.
