I like how the Harley rider was trying to keep his arms up and off the pavement. Him being in a T-shirt and sans gloves it would be the (now) prudent thing to attempt to do.

The "Dragon" is a road that I won't ride again. Too many blind corners and too many bike and car drivers pushing past their ability and wandering over the center line.

A friend of mine that filmed one of the "How to Ride the Dragon Safely" videos had this to say
That is a very common occurrence in that turn. Northbound it is a slightly decreasing radius corner and people often are waving or looking at the photographer as they approach the turn and then when they look back ahead they find the turn is tighter than they expected and then they can't make the turn. Most photographers no longer use that spot because of all the accidents.

Redbirds, I understand that! A guy a work was riding his HD there a few years ago when a guy came around a corner and into his lane. Pretty much like in the pics above. Our guy was severely injured. Airlifted to the hospital. I would like to avoid that.
Another guy at work, two weeks ago, was on his HD there. Went around a switchback, hit some sand and the rear wheel went out and he low sided. No injuries, just some cosmetic damage. Maybe we are just jinxed here at work...

Does anyone know how these people ended up?

Ferret, I sincerely hope you never get to see the underbelly of your ST. No one should have to see that!
Did the pink helmeted rider come off the Harley or the ST? I'm guessing the Harley, based on the T-shirt, but it's tough to tell from this shot.

There's a lot to what you're saying here. It certainly appears that the rider of the ST (or whatever it was) is looking at the HD as he approached. In one of the frames just before impact, the ST is actually more upright; again, suggesting target fixation and chopping the throttle off while trying to brake. I can't say I'd do any better if in the same situation but it seems chances for avoiding the crash would have improved if the ST rider would have pulled his eyes away, cranking his head to the right, leaned more and rolled on the throttle. Time to scrape that pretty muffler. Again, easier said than done. |
