Miles since retirement

I just tallied up my miles since I retired 2 years + one month ago and it's about 25,000 miles. So it looks like I'm half a Ferret.

That's good CurlyJoe. That's actually about 4 times more mileage than the "average" motorcyclist would put on in that time. The ST will raise your mileage ridden considerably. Just so easy to put big miles on with that bike.

That's about what I averaged for the 25 years after I left the mc industry, and went into the Highway Safety field before retirement. I started keeping accurate records in 2008 and for the years 2008- 2012 I rode like normal and averaged 10,700 miles a year, so figure that's what I rode every year during that time period.

I figure I averaged about 20,000 a year on the motorcycle, for the 17 years I was in the motorcycle industry. Then I was commuting to work by motorcycle and also riding for pleasure, but since I didn t keep records back then, that is just a estimate. Could be more or less.

I also rode for 7 years before going into the motorcycle industry. Even drove my motorcycle to high school and what little college I went to. I've ridden in 41 states, 2 Canadian provinces and 5 countries in Europe. Took my first out of state motorcycle trip in 1969 to Indiana with my mc mentor Bob Johnson. Now THAT GUY was a rider. Makes me look like a wuss. I never saw him in a car. EVER. Always on a motorcycle. If he and his wife had to go someplace, she drove, he rode. When he died I got his mc jacket. Langlitz Leathers out of Portland. He always wore custom leather jackets and pants and engineer boots and Bell helmets. I admired the heck out of that guy. We were friends and riding buds for 40 years until his death. I'm still friends with his daughter. Miss him a lot. I have never been much of a car guy either, unless forced to drive one by necessity, but not as dedicated as Bob was. That guy was a rider. I hope they say that about me after I'm gone. Ferret... Now that guy was a rider! Has a nice ring to it.

I figure I have somewhere upwards of 800,000 miles on two wheels. It's been a lot of fun. Wish I had kept accurate logs from day one, but who thinks of these things when they are 15 years old?

I have a reverse issue! I estimate I have between 7-9million miles flying! Maybe more. Lots more in cars and trucks in developing countries.
I retire in 3 years and 9 months approx.

I intend to completely turn the numbers around with the plan to wear out 2 CB1100s and 2 K75 RTs

I will ride like the devil him self is chasing to take me to his lair

Thats funny, I am terrified of flying. Terrified. Especially in little planes. Every take off, every landing, every turbulence bump, every mechanical noise like landing gear going up or down, or the flaps moving. I fly as little as possible. I like the concept of flying, and liken it to riding a motorcycle, but actually being in a plane...I'd rather not lol.

Trust me after a couple of million miles, storms, leaking fuel, hydraulic fluid, medical emergencies landings, military storming the plane to pull people off, engine failure and etc. you will sleep through it and be bored.

The worst is the never ending decline of comfort and service over the last 45 plus years.

Well that makes me a slacker! I have no idea how many miles I put since retirement. Having three bikes does make it a wee bit more complicated to add up but I bet it has been 8K. Summer is just too darn hot. Winter can be a bit too cool and when the weather is really nice there are woodworking projects to keep me busy.

Then the cats and dogs need attention (one cat is diabetic so that means real attention).

I did get the XR650L out today before the real heat hit.

It'll be a while before I'm accumulating retirement miles. I have 6 years of teaching and I'm 42 which is 48 total years. Retirement is based on 85 factor. 85-48 is 37. 37/2=18.5. So I have roughly 18.5 years until I can retire. Last year I put on 16,000 miles, so if I maintain that pace I should hit 296000 before I retire!

Sweet you will retire younger than I did @63. Hope they are all healthy for you. can't imagine have 18 more years to go.

Teaching is a good profession for a motorcycle rider as I'm assuming you get part of the summer off. Unless you work a second job in the summer of course.

A big part of the appeal of teaching for me was the hours and the holidays. I've gone 6142 miles since getting the bike in March with it's original reading of 3701. I'm adding another 1200 next week with my Northern Ontario tour!
