Avoiding Corona Virus
#31
Henrick's statement may seem extreme, but it brings up something along a tangent that I've been thinking about since I came back to work yesterday. To wax a little philosophic...

In late January, my wife underwent an extensive medical procedure. We both understood that the recovery period would be very long and arduous, and would keep her home-bound. She's still unable to get out other than short walks, and although she's got an extensive network of friends and coworkers who have visited her, brought her food, etc, I'm her primary caregiver, and our only source of income until she's fully recovered.

I gave some thought at the time to giving up riding until she could get back to work, thinking that in the remote chance that I got into an accident while she needed my care, we'd be screwed. Neither of us talked about it, and I decided that the huge convenience of riding to and from work rather than sitting for over an hour in the car each day outweighed the safety risk, and would help me keep my own sanity for the duration.

Lo and behold, I had an accident a few weeks ago when someone turned in front of me. Thankfully, it was very low speed, I wasn't noticeably injured, went on a work trip the next day, and I've been able to handle the situation outside of my home without alarming my wife. I'm counting myself extremely lucky, but, of course, the "what if" has been on top of my mind.

Yesterday, returning to work for the first time since my work trip and the Coronavirus outbreak, it was raining, so I drove. The roads were empty. For the past two days, I've gotten to work as quickly as I would have had I ridden. It got me thinking, and Henrick's post drove the point home.

As long as there is no time advantage to riding to and from work, and considering that the people who are currently driving are probably extremely distracted by what is going on, I'll limit my risks, and take the car.

Well, moot point about commuting on my bike for the time being. Orange County health services just ordered a shut down of all non-essential businesses through the end of the month. So, I'll be working from home. Unfortunately, assuming that the dealer that's fixing my Triumph is also deemed non-essential, it will be stuck there for a while.

Heard 7 million in San Fran are on lockdown.

if the govenor of Ohio declares a lock down I wont be riding, although not being one of the hoarder types, after a week or so I'll be eating the carpet and drapes, and wiping with last winters leaves lol.

1st 2 death cases in my Malaysia, one is young healthy and no known chronic issue... and there are still about 10,000 possible infected people roaming around not surrendering... I will try to remain home and office and not going anywhere, not even on my bike. Need to conserved petrol and avoid going to petrol station.

Maybe reverse those items. Wipe with the carpet and drapes, eat the leaves. It's your call of course, but I'm just trying to make sure that you are properly addressing any roughage needs that you might have at this time. In addition, if you choose to leave your drapes and carpet in place after use, you'll greatly reduce any concerns you might have of others encroaching upon any necessary social distancing needs that you've defined for yourself.

To balance my post out with something more serious to contemplate I'll offer up this link to the [url=https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/situation-reports]World Health Organization's Coronavirus Disease (COVID-2019) Situation Reports page where running totals of the impacts of this virus are being updated on a daily basis.

Forget the leaves. If temperatures sustain high enough in Ohio, use the garden hose. Healthier anyway, and uses significantly less butt wipe.

You can eat (or drink as tea) the leaves. Undecided

I’ve been practicing the “Save your own, go at work” strategy.

Ok, confusion now here in Orange County. What was first described yesterday as a lockdown of all non-essential businesses has now been back-peddled as a cautionary warning for safe distancing, with only certain types of businesses ordered to close. So, local government is fighting itself. On my way to work this morning, there were lines out the doors at the two markets I pass. Drivers are going to be increasingly distracted as the situation worsens. Definitely not the time I want to be vulnerable on the highway.

In So-ON, there is no "lock down", and some grocer stores are busy (e.g. Costco), and others are not. The roads for the most part appear like Christmas Day ... maybe better. All regional traffic is very light.

I found a new bottle of rye that seems to be a hit in the household.

I heard that distilleries are converting to making hand sanitizer. Better use that Rye sparingly, Gold.
