Many have tried and many have failed :-) The problem with trying to divine what CB means is that for consistency one has to also explain CL, CX, CJ, CBR, CBX, CR, CRF, etc and also things like why the CB750 (2nd gen Nighthawk) is called the CBX750 in some non-US markets... If anyone knows the origin of the original 'CB' designation, I'm all ears/eyes :-)

This is what I was able to find:- (source :- http://www.hondacbworld.com/ )
The abbreviation "CB" is derived from the Japanese "C" LU "B" Man Race which in 1958 was held at the famous Suzuka Circuit. The "C" stands for the type and the "B" refers to the sporty version.

In the past, Hondas abbreviation CB stood for "city bike" in Germany. But I don't know if this is really true...

I always thought it was just shorthand for "cub".

The CBX750 was a different bike. Higher performance, faired, six speed sport bike. When they made the 90s Nighthawk 750 (and its Euro/Asia cousin CB750), they used a detuned version of the CBX750 engine, but a different frame. CBX750 ![]() We were recently discussing the meaning of CB over on the Nighthawk board. If you look at the models over the decades, it would seem that CB is the designation for a standard style street bike with a single or inline configured engine.

Don't forget about the CB500T and the CB350 twins.
