Commuting Math - this is going to get interesting
#1
In early October, my company announced that it will be shutting down, and I'm part of a skeleton crew shutting down through the end of the year. I've been searching for a job during that time, and have a very nice offer in my inbox as of last night to start in January.

Here's the interesting part as far as the commute. For the past 20 years, I have ridden 12.5 miles each way daily, traversing two major freeways. I can use car pool lanes and lane split as needed. All in all, not bad. Plus, the job has afforded me the ability to store a third motorcycle at work.

The new job is 60 miles away from home, but I can work remotely four days per week and commute to the office one day. So, the mileage will be about equal overall. The new commute will put me on a guarded toll lane of a busy freeway for about 2/3 of the ride. Motorcycles can use the toll lanes for free, so I'll basically be on a Hotwheels track for that distance coming and going. I can rotate between my three bikes for that trek. Eventually if the job really works out, it might make sense to trade out one of the bikes for something more suited for long-distance touring.

I can't store a motorcycle as it is an office without a shop space, but thankfully I can fit all three bikes in my garage. Tight fit, but it will work. I can never own anything larger than a Fiesta to make it work, but I have no plans to get another car.

Should be good! Hopefully...

Sounds like the daily commute for most people back here in NY Gone!

I've heard of guys in the police academy doing Montauk to Manhattan everyday. screw that commute!

Glad to hear you got a new offer!

Good luck with the new job Gone. One day's commute can't be all bad and 60 miles lets you get in a good ride. For someone old school like me it's hard to believe people actually get to work from home lol (as my son does)

When I worked at Petersen Publishing in the 90s, it was two hours each way in the car or two hours each way on train/subway/bus. I wasn't riding back then.

The museum is two blocks from where the publishing building was. Happy to make the commute twice a month on Saturdays, and it's 50 minutes by motorcycle.

One thing that is a plus with the new gig is that it's closer to Mom's than where I am now, and our five-year plan is to move in with her as she needs more care and rent our current condo.

Thanks, Ferret. It will be weird at first, I'm sure. Mrs. G transitioned to telemedicine from home during the pandemic and did great with it. We still have her desk and I can use the spare bedroom as an office.

It will seem weird not to ride every day, but I have to remind myself that I'll be riding the same time and distance, even if it's compressed into one day a week.

Very good to hear about the job offer! Beyond the commute and mc logistic issues, it sounds like you're excited about the new position, and if that's the case perhaps any issues with a longer commute won't be felt so much. Does the one day per week have to be on the same day each week?

Thanks, Pdedse! Still working out the details on the commute days. I am excited about it. Tough to get kicked out of a job I can do with my eyes closed, but good to be challenged. I don't have a specific job like accountant, lawyer, etc. I'm like Liam Neeson. I have a very specific set of skills aquired over a very long career related to producing events in the automotive industry, and this company wants to get deeper into that market. So it's a good fit, and I'll be working with industry contacts I've known for a long time. And around stuff that drinks gasoline and turns it into noise.

I had an idea of transitioning to the motorcycle market, but haven't been able to get far, even with some mc industry freinds pushing my resume.

And MacGyver. Event production puts someone in a career that can't really be defined. It's a "This is the current problem. Figure out how to solve it". Very organic. So, it's not something that can be easily put in a defined title. Most opportunities in this business depend on good relationships and when someone has a need, landing a job is largely based on "I know a guy."
