Renault Alliance - "Car of the Year" (1985 or '86?) was a lemon.

The fuel gauge needle in the dashboard used to bounce up and down on road bumps.

And was possibly equipped with a magneto. No battery necessary.

Based on additional info, I agree with you..

Would add that likely due to magneto design, experienced this 1500 km away from home, when generator was overcharging battery, burnt out a hole in it, acid leaked out and battery had less than 2 V. As long as I kept all light/acc off, I was able to make home with totally dry battery... nedless to say, I had to remove stop light bulb..
None of any vehicle of mine was ever towed, exept Renault 12 that broke crankshaft between main bearing 4 & 5
Thanks for your full update Jim & Frulk

Yes they did
That was in Europe/R12, around 1973??.
In Canada, as far as I remember we had R5-Le car, and a few more Alliance or Reliance ????

Update for Houtman

EDIT:
"In Canada they sold the R10, R12, and R16 in the 1970 time-frame..... Prior to that, there must be been R4 sales, ...... And later in the 70’s there were the sporty R15 and R17 models. .....
Later came the R5, ....... "

Canada also had the Encore model around 1984 time-frame.
Hope this refreshed your memory a bit Smile

I like the redundancy the pull starters provide in addition to the battery. A couple of times they saved me from a loooong, hot walk out of the desert backcountry to pavement for help.

My first ride was only kickstarter. On bad days it was a pain. Otherwise, cool to use.

Is that for real? Never thought I'd ever see a motorcycle part that was as expensive as an airplane part. A new 4 cyl magneto for my bird goes for about $1100.

Maybe a week since I got it almost 10 months ago. Even though I’m in California it’s been raining and cold,if it’s under 55 I ain’t touchin the bike. I remember years ago when I was invincible I wouldn’t think twice about goin for a ride 40 degree weather, now the idea of that just makes me cold.

We here among the north shore of Lake Ontario would welcome that opportunity. Smile

For some reason it still feels like early February here. The snow/ice hasn't receded, nor has the road salt. When it rains, it will be a total mess.

I think the high today will be at least -6C - I think? The lows are still in the feelin' -20C area.
