Super Bowl's in L.A. Roads are empty, time to ride!
#1

I figured I'd post my own Super Bowl Sunday ride pictures. I didn't know what the roads would be like in the area of SoFi Stadium, so I left for my shift at the Petersen Museum on the early side, in case I had to maneuver around any gridlock.

As it turned out, the highways were running wide open. I got to downtown L.A. so quickly that I had time to do a little sightseeing before heading to the museum, and I spent the late afternoon in the L.A. Harbor area on the way home.

First stop was the growing Arts District downtown. Two projects are of interest to me - first is the Bike Shed, which has had its opening pushed back repeatedly, but looks like it's getting very close. I got a sneak peak at the interior a while back, and am excited to hang out here when I'm in the area. The second project is the new Sixth Street Bridge over the L.A. river. The original bridge, dating back to the early '30s, was torn down a few years ago due to crumbling concrete - it was a construction flaw that finally caught up with a very classic structure, that had been used in several movies. The replacement looks very interesting, and nothing like the original.

After I left the museum, I headed to the harbor - the continued gridlock of cargo ships sitting just outside the breakwater is weird and fascinating to see. It was such a nice day that the view of Catalina Island, 26 miles off of the coast, was very clear. I poked around the harbor, checked out the ships, and headed over the Vincent Thomas bridge to home for dinner. A beautiful day of riding.

Gone that is a very nice presentation, lots to see and admire.
It gets close to Alprider's classy pictures, when i read the intro i wondered what Catalina island would look like, and there it was, very nice name for it and have remembered it ever since i heard of it.
Good to hear you, the family and the museum are in good shape, thanks for posting.

Thanks, guys! The view of Catalina is very different from time-to-time depending on what the wind is doing. It was very calm yesterday. That photo was taken at
Angel's Gate Park in San Pedro, and the structure to the left is the Korean Bell of Friendship, which was a gift from the Korean government. I love that park - it's on a bluff overlooking the ocean. During WW2, it was a coastal defense station, and there are still concrete pads and the remnants of huge cannon placements if you look around just down the edge of the bluff. A great place to bring a sandwich, sit on the bluff, and watch the world go by.

Thank you very much for the kind sentiments, Max. The family is well, and the museum is doing fine - we're still not able to conduct guided tours with large groups, but hopefully that will come back in March. It's still a great place to hang out.

Thanks for the tour, GI60. It is definitely a lot more fun and interesting to tour big cities when the streets are empty. Great pics as usual.

Cool! Love seeing where other members ride, what things look like in their neck of the woods and the bikes posing all over. Pretty special when there's so little traffic.

My final ride was about 30 minutes down the 405 freeway from Long Beach to the city I live in. This was after the game had started, so the freeway was a moonscape. I was going about 75, and a few guys flew past me in BMWs going triple-digits. I think the feeling was "We'll never be able to do this again!"

I love seeing where everyone else rides too. I'm surrounded by city, so I don't have anywhere that's out in the country or anywhere near rustic. So, I'm a bit jealous there, but we all ride where we can ride!

Around here, every NFL Sunday is like Super Bowl Sunday, at least from a traffic perspective. People are beyond nuts for the Denver Broncos and everything (roads, restaurants, stores) empties out for several hours while they’re playing. Personally, I couldn’t care less. It’s one of the best times to ride!
