2014 good 2nd ride?
#21
Over engine guards?? Mind is officially blown. Pictures??

That’s for explaining the difference in bike years. Would of never guessed the differences. Now I’m even more excited about picking my bike up.

First real ride will be going up Lemmon (my neighborhood mountain)

Get familiar with samurider.com we get a lot of the stuff their. Mr. T, the owner speaks English and has awesome customer service.

japan.webike.net is also a reputable firm with lots of stuff. They don't speak English, but use Google Translate which has lead to some interesting, and sometimes funny, conversations. I've ordered from both, but prefer Samurider (disclaimer: Samurider is a site supporter. Notice the link at the upper right of your screen)

Hi Sk8r. You'll discover you have lots of choices for engine guards, which range from minimal to oversized. The popular Honda OEM and Motech items are in the middle, size-wise. They are good choices, but I personally did not care for the strappy part that wraps around the lower frame, so I installed this Hurricane guard. Well made and matches the frame color exactly. Another option to consider.

When you get your bike I hope you find the opportunity to ride up to Kitt Peak--another great mountain road, with fewer bicycles.

Looks like I have a lot of research to do on engine guards. Hope I don’t 2nd guess my decision.
I’ve ridden Kitt Peak. Nice road, but boring getting there.
Sadly, I’m one of those damn cyclists who ride up Lemmon. But I’m not one who thinks he owns the road. Hate cyclists that do!! But all cyclists are jackasses, even me sometimes hahahaha

I've got SW-Motech's on my '13 (black) and the Honda units on my '14 - I prefer the SW-Motech. They stick out a wee bit further and seem more robust with a better mounting system.

Having the CB1100 is like having a nice Buick in the fleet for those time when you want a nice easy ride (a very sporty Buick mind you). It is very well suited for those short rides around town, perhaps not as much fun as your sport bike for a romp up Mt. Lemon but I think you'll find that it handles that ride well too. With a few mods (e.g. luggage rack, some sort of windscreen) it can be made into a good touring machine. It's an excellent all arounder. It has plenty of sporty riding potential for my needs but for serious sport riders there are much better choices out there. Unlike the 60's and most of the 70's you can go down to the dealer and get a track ready bike and do well on the track if your skills can back it up. Today, like cars, the market has matured so you can get the bike to suit your riding needs. Be that dual sport, adventure, posing, something to go to coffee on, perhaps commute or bombing the canyons. All out performance, at least for me and it seems a lot of other folks, is not king anymore. Now I just want a bike so I can do some riding, light touring (long weekends), run to coffee with the guys - something that does not urge me to give it the beans all the time. The CB1100 hits those ticks in spades. Most of the guys that bought then moved on fairly fast wanted a much more sporting bike. The rest of us wanted the bike version of the family car. With the lower insurance rates that go with it. Big Grin

I'll add, it was my 2nd bike, but my "first" bike, Moto Guzzi Griso, has been sold and the Honda is still here. Luckily, we all have different needs and wants and there are plenty of really good choices out there to pick from so hopefully this will give you a good idea of how it scratches my itches so you can see if it would be a good fit for you two.

Now my 2nd bike is a XR650L. Which another story. Big Grin

If you buy new stock tires seem to be very thin skinned, at least the front ones. Angel GT's are excellent replacement units (as well as the Road Pilots).

Heat can be a problem with the aging of the oil, easy solution is to just change it a bit more often, it really depends upon your use of the bike. In Phoenix I simply ride less and in the mornings.

Thanks Rboe

Great insight.
The 1 thing I can with little issues is change the oil.
After 5 years and 2k miles, I’m sure tires need replacing from sitting. Gotta assume they are still original for now. Big fan of the Road Pilots.
The main reason for the bike is to go bobbing around town on. I’d love to turn it into a cafe racer someday but by then my back will probably tell me ‘no thanks’. Also, my best friend has stage 4 lung cancer, so it’s also going to be used by him on our rides together.
Has anyone made a cafe racer out of one yet?
Would love to see my dream bike already made

Peterbaron, you be da man! I’ve never had good luck with search buttons.
Those bike pictures sure are pretty! Now I know the potential it really does have.

Talk about minor variations to a simple engine guard. TBH they all look almost the same to me. I’m sure when the time to buy comes it’ll take a week to decide.
One thing for sure is that they all the bikes look dope with them on!!
