A little help?
#1

Hey all. So, here's the deal. I'm a large chap. I have rather muscular legs and because of that, I feel quite a lot of knee pain on even short rides. My theory is that my thighs, which would be hams on any other animal, press into my calves and create a sort of backwards pressure on my knees, like they're being pressed forward.

So, short of purposfully atrophying my legs to shrink the muscles, does anyone have any suggestions to ease my knee pain?

I would doubt that is the actual cause of your knee pain, although I don't doubt that you have it. You could find a way to drop the pegs or raise the seat and see if that helps.

Do you have knee pain from any other activities, or only from sitting on the bike? I know on my cruiser, if I've been lazy and not gone running for a while, I get knee pain simply from having my legs locked in a single position. It also depends on whether I wear my armored riding boots, or my shorter armored shoes. There's a ton of of practically unrelated factors that could be causing you issues.

If you live back in the country or a secluded neighborhood, get something an inch and a half thick firm foam pad maybe, throw it on the seat and go for a ride. If that relieves the pain, order one of the tall seats from Whitehouse or whitehorse or whatever it is. If it doesn't you'll know its not the seat peg relationship.

The ferret makes a good suggestion that will cost you nothing to try. I can think of only four suggestions for possible solutions to your problem that involve changes to the bike.

1. A taller seat with a flat top. This will not only raise you up but also allow you to slide back, both of which will change your knee angle. A custom seat will cost you some $.

2. You could fabricate a foot peg lowering kit which might add some help to suggestion 1. I say fabricate because it is doubtful you will find one being made.

3. Replacing the bar with one that is lower and has less pullback might allow you to move back on the seat somewhat and relieve some knee pressure. Check the Flanders website for many options. http://www.sideroadcycles.com/ImportedMo...ars78.html

4. Look into installing highway pegs on your CB. This will allow you to stretch your legs forward when conditions permit thus relieving knee pressure. Again, you will have to be creative because I have not seen any highway pegs designed for the CB11.

Hi mrhonda1987, apart from the ergonomics and other adjustments, you could consult a Doctor/physio too on the side, physio therapy can work wonders, also it would be long term gains.. I used to have troubling knee pains before, which vanished after adding some rubber band knee extension work, deeper squats and lying hamstring curls for the legs.

At this point, I think I'll get the SW Motech crash bars and fit a pair of old school chrome "HONDA" pegs that I've been collecting in my basement since i had my old SOHC CB750.

I really, REALLY don't want to have to trade it in for something like a Shadow, since I hate the cruiser scene and I wanted a CB1100 since I saw the Tokyo Motor Show pictures.

There ya go. Get some Buell pegs to. They will help. Remove rubber from stock for 1/2" difference..

Update! After a trip to the local wallyworld, I purloined a Coleman brand ATV Gel seat cover. Not being a camper or having an ATV, I decided to fold it in half and try it on the CB1100 to help alleviate my knee issue. I'm happy to report that after a short 30 mile ride, the knee was offering nothing but compliance. A bit stiff, but that happens in chairs. NO PAIN! Hooray! I'm still going to get a crash bar and mount some pegs, but this made my freakin' day. Thanks all. Ride safe.
