Windy morning...
#1

My sixth ride was brief and windblown. From the south at 18, gusting to 25. Saddled up at 10:30 am, temps were 43, windchill 31. Home at 12:30 pm, temp was 51.

Only 51 miles, but it helped calm my trepidation with the front brakes. Was able to modulate them adequately. Honestly, I was getting a bit stressed over my minor mishap a week ago Friday.

I consider my weather here blessed compared to what the east and northeast are diggng out from under. I hope all you easterners are safe and warm.

On a side note, I have an appointment next Saturday to have my 600 mile service performed, although I'll have less than 475 on the clock by then.

You have a whole week to get in 125 miles lol.

Glad you found nothing wrong with your brakes. We suspected as much. However you needed to find out for yourself.

I noticed when I was waxing her yesterday that my wheels, especially the rear, are in dire need of cleaning - that's something I want to attend to this week.

WD-40? Spray on a rag and wipe? No getty on tires, right? No fall down, go boom... Ugh

Quick update...

Got home from work this afternoon, dug out the paper towels and the WD-40.

At first I sprayed the fluid on the towels but in too close proximity to the bike, ugh. Went outside for that part as required.

WD-40 is "greasy" as sin, got some on my fingers and subsequently a little on the sidewalls - immediately wiped all that off as best as I was able. Wheels did come clean... not perfect but much better. Did front and rear.

I'm a bit uncertain as to using the WD-40 to clean my chain when the time comes. I'm dreadfully afraid of getting it in places I don't want, especially the tires. Just seems messy as heck.

Will it evaporate..??

Maybe I'll pick up some kerosene, try that on the chain instead... Comments, suggestions, other material to use?

Thanks.

Try cutting a piece of cardboard that will fit between the rear sprocket and the tire. With the bike on center stand you can rotate the rear wheel and using a tube nozzle on the WD-40, spray the chain without any getting on the tires. I also do this when lubing the chain. Afterwards, I use old rags to dry the chain before applying Tirox chain lube.

Thank you for your input redbirds.

I have used a piece of cardboard when applying lube and it seems to work pretty well.

What I experienced this afternoon (with a nozzle on the can) was the WD-40 emitting a near "fog-like" haze of the material. Looking at the wood floor of my storage building, you can see where "drops" developed on the floor. I guess I became nervous of having the WD-40 mist over the surface of the tires, causing a real riding hazard.

Anyway... not sure if WD-40 evaporates or remains in some form on the surfaces it touches.

Thank you again for your input!

Here's an interesting take on WD-40 from Motorcyclist magazine.
