Grilled Onions

I'm calling this a small victory.

My wife is away taking care of her Mom, so nobody nagged me to roll up our patio shade before I went to work, knowing that Santa Ana winds were in the afternoon forecast. Ok, I should have known...

A neighbor called to let me know my patio shade is about to rip out and blow away. So, jumped on the CB to make a quick run home to crank it back in.

If anyone is familiar with In-N-Out Burgers here in in CA, then you know that the air within a block of any of their locations is full of the smell of grilled onions. We have an In-N-Out tucked up against the freeway ramp I take when I leave the office, and I get a nose full of onions every time I get on the freeway, but since July and losing my sense of smell from the virus, I haven't smelled a thing.

On this quick trip home, however, for the first time since July, there it was... just the faintest whiff of grilled onions!

There's a Hooters just before that freeway ramp. At the point that I can smell their fryer oil again, I'll consider myself fully cured.

congrats.

I would consider not being able to smell ( or taste) onions a blessing.

I love grilled onions. Doesn't matter now, because my local gym shut down due to the pandemic, but there is an In-N-Out in the same parking lot. It's a few blocks from my house, so as I'm walking toward the gym, to help my body and get a good workout, I start to smell the grilled onions at In-N-Out. It's a test of will to not just pass the gym and go get a burger. My loss of smell has made me a great asset to my wife in the kitchen. I can chop up onions and all other manner of smelly things without a care.

Also means I can't tell when I'm gassing her out of the garage with brake cleaner, chain lube, exhaust smells, etc, so it's had its disadvantages as well.

After much fanfare and publicity, In-n-Out finally opened their first two locations in Colorado last year. I had an In-n-Out within 1/2 mile of my place in San Diego, so no big deal, but people around here went ballistic over the grand openings. The first week they were open, the drive-through lines were 9 hours long. Can you imagine? Hey, they make a good burger, but so do a lot of other places.

Rubio’s tried to make a go of it here a few years ago, but they didn’t succeed and finally closed all of their locations. Between In-n-Out and Rubio’s, I’m a sucker for the latter.

None of us can smell carbon monoxide either. So we can't help each other.

Grilled onions are like bacon, everything tastes better by their presence. April is Sweet Vidalia Onion harvest time and the delicious aroma of sweet onions is a delight while riding through the farm country here.
