Trivia about Cisco. There’s an old ruined, dilapidated service station in Cisco. Back in the early 60’s when I-70 was going in Johnny Cash stopped there to fill up his Cadillac. While there he made small talk with the station owner and afterwards wrote and recorded Cisco Cliftons Filling Station. The porcelain light fixture that Johnny’s Caddy would have been parked under is now a lamp in a good friends living room.

Had you turned left on 279 instead of right on 128 out of Moab, you’d have ridden past the one place I’ve ever rock climbed outside of a gym. Beautiful country out there. Colorado Monument is a wonderful drive/ride, too. Have to disagree with you a wee bit on Moab—fun town. Touristy, but there’s a reason why touristy places attract people. But I get that you weren’t looking for that on your trip. Great report. Makes me want to load up the trailer and go west. You’re like the Horace Greeley of motorcycling.

That’s a cool story, Frulk! Love me some Johnny Cash.

Yeah, EmptySea I’m judging Moab from the seat of a motorcycle. Disney World may be fun for tourists, but as a rider I’ll pass!

Nice write-up Stichill! I find it fascinating to see through somebody else’s eyes, the same scenery I grew up around and often take for granted. Reading your posts made me look at those areas with a renewed sense of interest and indeed they are truly awe inspiring (driving past anything 50 times can make it seem boring I guess). Thanks for the humility refresher!

Glad you found inspiration and insight, Whoops. I think we’re all guilty of overlooking our own back yard. I grew up in Virginia, taking all the history and rich culture for granted. As I travel other parts of the country, I notice many places have little history or unique culture and seem a bit bland by comparison. I also never fully appreciated the mountain geography of Virginia until moved away I traveled back there as an adult.

One time I did a ride report on some areas around here that ferret knows well. He responded similarly to you: that it was strange to see someone else’s take on things with which he was so familiar.

You live in an amazing part of the world! I’m sure I’ll be back again sometime.

Just listened to this, Frulk. What a great Cash tune!

"...and once a big black Cadillac spent seven dollars there." Thumbs Up
