This seems like a good place to ask this...
I don't have a GPS unit now. I use Google Maps for my route planning. The reason I have not purchased a unit is because I cannot figure out if you can pre-program a route with one (or with mapping apps for iPhone) or if you only have the choice of the two or three route suggestions the unit gives you. Is there an app or a GPS unit with which you can easily and completely customize your route?

I use my iPhone for directions. I put on my Bluetooth so I can hear when and where I have to turn. I use it daily for work, and we have used it when traveling out of state on the bike. Small, light and fits in my pocket.

Yes, this is how I do it. I first enter my current location and where I want to go. The app then will highlight different options on the map, so you can choose your route. I edit it by moving one of the highlighted options based on the routes I want to take. I usually have to zoom in, so I can see with more detail the street names, numbers, etc. I then push start, and it will tell me where and when to turn. The Bluetooth works well, and the map has not given me any problems yet. I use the app that came with my iPhone.

For Christmas my son got me a Sena SMH10, a Bluetooth headset and intercom. There's a streamlined unit that clips to my helmet and wires leading to compact microphone and speakers that attach to the inside. I use it with an iPhone which goes into my pocket or tank bag. For longer trips I have an SAE to USB adapter under my seat which plugs into a battery tender lead, and run the phone's power cord out of the bag, between the tank and seat to the power adapter.

In operation, when someone calls me I hear a ring. I say "hello!", and starting talking with whoever is calling me. To call someone, I tap the single button on the unit on the lower edge of my helmet. This brings up Siri's "beep-beep" and I say "Call ___". This has to be someone with a phone number in my address book. If there's more than one number for them I can specify "... work" or "...home". I hang up by tapping the button or just waiting for it to terminate by itself.

I can ask Siri to give me turn by turn voice directions to any place I have an address for in my address book, from anywhere I happen to be. I get at least one advance notice of an upcoming turn and then an immediate direction maybe 50 ft ahead of it.

SMH10 can also be used as an intercom between multiple units and there's accessories for open face helmets, and wired earplugs. I probably don't use half the functionality.

After I got over my hesitation to give up the splendid isolation of riding, it took me awhile to figure it out. But now that it's working I like having it.

Try Amazon, or Ebay, I got a handlebar mount for my Galaxy Note II from someone on Ebay. Just do a search using your phone make and model.

My phone has a 5.7" screen and I find that Google maps and navigator are more than sufficient for my needs. One can manipulate routes with ease on Google maps. I do a courier job in the afternoon, and sometimes I get an address I'm unfamiliar with, it comes in handy then. Also use a bluetooth module on my helmet, for communication, and sometimes listen to music with Pandora. Don't do the music all of the time, but sometimes it's nice.

It was about 20 dollars for the mount, and it works great. Here's a pic, no phone, but you get the idea.

I'm not familiar with the Iphone app for maps, but I use Google maps and Google Navigator on my android phone, either just as reference, or actual directions coming through the bluetooth. I use it a lot for my courier gig, you can program routes on it for sure. It takes a little getting acquainted, but once you do it's quite useful.

I guess I'm just not that bright. I can use Google Maps on my pc to create a route and drag points to different roads to modify the route (for instance, to hit a particularly curvy stretch of road just off the more direct route). I can then save that map to "My Places" in Google and come back to it. That part is fine, BUT I do not know how to get that saved route to display on my iPhone (5s). I downloaded an app called My Maps Pro which sort of does this, but it won't tell me, for example, how many miles it is to the next turn from my current point. To get that sort of information, I have to use the google maps app or iPhone maps and ask for directions from my current point to the next turn and would have to repeat that each and every time I wanted to know how far to the next turn. When you print the route in Google Maps, btw, it does not give you the mileage from leg to leg.

I don't need to have audible directions, nor do i need the fastest route. I need to be able to set up the route of my choosing and then, when I am not sure where to turn, to be able to look at whatever device that it is and have it show me my current location in relation to my chosen route and, ideally, how far it is to the next 'check point'. I don't see that any of the replies have addressed this, but like I said, I'm not the brightest bulb on the tree. Thanks for your help, though. Smile
