Engine disassembly
#1

I was looking though the other threads and I couldn't find one where someone took apart their engine. I have a few questions on the topic. 1: Is it necessary to remove the engine from the frame to get the heads and cylinders off (is there enough room under the backbone)? 2: Has anyone polished the cooling fin edges? And 3: Would polishing the fin edges affect the engine's ability to cool? I love the look of polished edges on air-cooled engines and I'm just wondering if anyone has tried it on their CB yet.

I doubt anyone here has gotten to the mileage where they would need to do the top end. Isn't our highest mileage member around the 50K mark or something?

Re the other question: shiny surfaces are, in general, worse emitters of heat that dark or matte surfaces. That said, the surface area you would be polishing is so small that I don't think you would reduce your cooling capacity in any meaningful way.

1. No*

2. Don't think so.

3. Don't know, but I am inclined to agree with kmoney. Probably not a significant effect on cooling as long as you don't reduce fin area significantly.

* But if all you want to do is polish the engine why not take your time and remove the engine? Not a lot of extra work and the ability to get to all the bits and do a good job.

Cheers
