Exhaust Discoloration Question
#1

If you change out your exhaust to an aftermarket Chrome Exhaust and/or Slip On, will you still get the Discoloration(bronzing) like on the stock exhausts? Also...If you go with a "Black" exhaust", will the discoloration eventually show thru the Black as well? Thanks gang!

Mike, I suspect the answer is that it will depend on what the aftermarket product is made of. I've got almost black headers now and their are golden patches here and there on the muffler—particularly where it joins the collector or whatever it is. As I recall, the standard bikes have a stainless steel header; the DLX has a double-walled chrome headers which resist discoloration.

I've just accepted the discolouratation as a design feature. Others loathe it.

Yes in my short time of 7 weeks owning it, I have accepted that as well. It would tear me up tho to add a nice Pretty chrome exhaust and 500 miles later start bronzing on me!!!!

Others with more technical knowledge than me will tell you much more about it. Chip Beck had his coated with something to stop it. See here, http://cb1100forum.com/forum/showthread....#pid112599

The bronzing is a characteristic of stainless steel under the high exhaust temps. The reason the deluxe exhaust does not discolor is because the used stainless steel main pipes wrapped with a second chrome pipe. This keeps the temperature down on the second pipe.

It's interesting that Honda continues to use the single-skinned stainless steel headers on the standard model. Witness these pictures of Jssnider's Canadian 2016 bike [url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/144896685@N04/shares/K7YkyS]here. I'm not sure why they didn't add a few bucks to the price and use the double skinned chrome pipes on all the models. It would, in my opinion, have been a better look.

I have a theory. I think Honda went with the single wall stainless pipes on the original model as a nod to the past. As I recall, one of the first mods everyone made to their inline 4 UJMs was to swap out the chrome 4 into 2 pipes for a 4 into 1 stainless pipe from Kerker, MAC, Yosh, etc...

I was not one of those guys and always preferred to keep the double walled chrome pipes, but I was definitely in the minority.

Personally, I like the chrome 4 into 2 pipes fitted to the EX/DLX models best. That's more like what my bikes looked like back in the 80s.

^^^ Interesting theory, Flyn. I agree with you about the EX/DLX pipes, although if Honda had fitted the bike with something like the Pipemasters or Wyvern 4 into 4 pipes, I would have liked it even better.

Mike,

All un-coated stainless single wall headers will turn bronze after several heat cycles. Single wall chrome headers will rainbow color near the engine where temps are highest. Double wall chrome headers like the Delux has will not discolor as the outer wall does not get hot enough. Single wall stainless headers can be Jet-Hot coated with a chrome or colored finish that will not discolor even under very high temps. Cost is under $200 plus your time to remove and ship your header to them. Here is my Jet Hot coated header which still looks perfect after a year on my bike. Cheers.

Chip
