Ok, I said molecule and should have said atom. I am obvioulsy not a chemist so Google is my friend. It turns out the O2 atom does have a highter weight, but N2 is larger. Read some, or all, of this: http://www.getnitrogen.org/pdf/graham.pdf

O2 it is a molecule. O is the atom. You had it correct.

And just for FYI as we're on this topic...

What does a green valve stem cap mean?

These caps indicate the type of air that is in the tire. Nitrogen tires have a blue or green cap on the valve stem and regular tires will have a black or silver cap on the valve stem.

I want to know how do they get 100% nitrogen into a tire? Do they vacuum out the air before filing it? If not, they are simply adding nitrogen to the air already in the tire when it is mounted. There would still be oxygen and water vapor present in your tires.

Good point Kenny! Never thought of that. Personally I've always thought the nitrogen in passenger vehicle tires was mostly just nonsense and added profit for the dealer, or whoever sells N2. Racing, etc. well, different matter I guess.

I work as a civilian in Navy aviation and the Navy does use dry nitrogen in aircraft tires for all the reasons like corrosion, etc. Also in the big airborne radar I work on we use dry nitrogen in part of the transmission line to increase dielectric strength. But being dry, it also helps prevent corrosion. The rest of the line uses filtered and dried bleed air from the engines.

In spite of the fact that the world supply is getting low, I run Helium in my tyres. Makes the bike lighter on its feet and lets me perform my favourite squeaky voice party trick at coffee stops.

It also reduces the risk of an explosion due to an overheated tire or brake. Last thing you want is to retract an overheated wheel into the well, only to have it explode inside the aircraft structure. That could hurt!
