I have found, (as long as your bike is under warranty at least), it is best to follow the manufacturers, the guys who designed and manufactured the product, recommendations. YMMV
I am always amazed by people (not saying you) who quote the manufacturer like gospel on things they support, and then dismiss off hand what the manufacturer says on things they don't.
Agreed Mickey, you have to read through the crap, but when issue's like this come up Honda or any other company, you can be assured we will be the last to know.

I am not trying to raise any fear in anyone but there is more than just myself that have had this noise with 40 weight oil in then changed back to the recommended 30 weight oil and the noises went away.
I don't know how you can say that is nothing..
True the dealership should have done more but they didn't. They, the so called Honda certified staff just told me it was a break in period for the oil which I think we all can agree on is a load of cr ap.
To Guth and or any other forum moderator, can this thread be locked and closed since it was derailed and if I have any other concerns or questions I can pm those that have been helping/guiding me along. I think those that run into this noise issue can weed through the derailment and learn what others, not only myself, have done to get their bikes back to something more normal.
If those may sayers read the thread title it was about the strange noise after the first service which just so happened to turn out to be an oil issue. Not a debate on viscosities.
And to davidsagree, have you not heard of different editions of a book or manual? So then it is possible for two copies to say different things... Unless in a perfect world there is only one version but there is no such thing just like our bikes are not identical and each one is unique even coming off the same assembly line.. Sorry but interpretation on how one reads something just like how I am sure your interpreting this comment differently than what it is actually saying.

Dbuster oil threads are like dandelions. You can kill one, but another will just pop up in it's place.

That is fine, another one can pop up. This thread was about my getting ready for the riding season and I was greeted by bad sounds. Somehow it was derailed into an oil debate. Was hoping that it could have remained a decent thread where if someone else had bad sounds like what I shared that they could read about how others, including others not just myself, had resolved the noise. To include others not exactly in a frozen region either...
Like I have been saying all along our bikes are not the same and some just don't like running the same as others. Sure they are cb1100's but they all came off the assembly line at different times which means they are not the same.

A guide to help assistance from American Honda Motor Co.
our concern, an intermittent engine noise,the cause is unknown.
(1) contact the service manager at a dealer with your concern, tell him your facts as far as your engine noise goes. NO hearsays.your experience is all that counts, no other opinions or internet forum gibberish as far as problem and cures. try to duplicate your concern for him, ask him to document your concern on their company service or repair order with your name address phone number and most important you bikes serial number. ask him to contact his area Honda service rep for assistance with your concern.ask for a copy of the repair order. Be polite, demand nothing.
(2)with your copy of the repair order, contact Honda motorcycle customer service with your concern. again quote only your concerns with your machine not internet gibberish. Honda will document your info by your model and serial number. recontact the dealer in person and Honda customer service every seven days for followup.Be polite,demand nothing. the more contacts with facts that Honda receives the sooner our concerns will be looked at. opinions and gibberish are ignored to keep from clouding the original concern received from we the owners of our Honda cb1100's. note: I have not read here of a engine failure so to me this means there is no fire to put out. contact the dealer and Honda customer service and do the follow ups. ride and enjoy knowing that your concern is in the Honda data base. avoid the internet gibberish .

Seems to like everyone after swapping to 10w40 has the rattle which is to thick of oil for the relief valve. When you swap back you got to remember after changing O/F there is still about a quart left in the motor. Not sure about now but I would still think do but new motors always come with beak in oil meaning it has ZINK in the oil helps break in motor and seat the rings it's very hard to find oil with ZINK now. I'm going to run my oil for atleast 1,000 miles due to getting my rings seated ! But that's just me I'm not telling anyone else to do it. If you ever rebuilt a motor of any kind jack roush sells break in oil but it's very high ( nascar) but you need ZINK in a new motor
