CB1100 Noob Question re Slip-ons...
#1

This might be a dumb question for most folks here, but the 2014 I bought a few weeks ago came with a carbon fiber version of the Yoshimura RS-3 slip-on. When I posted my "hello" to the new members section I expressed a little dislike for the RS-3 and one or two people mentioned they would trade me the stock for the Yoshimura.

I tried to find the carbon fiber version that my bike has online and it seems that either they don't make it anymore or I am just looking in all the wrong places. What's the draw for the RS-3 on our bikes? Noise? Less restricted air flow? And is there any benefit to the carbon fiber version? Surely it is just a wrap so it doesn't really reduce weight, right? Is it purely aesthetics?

From what I read about unrestricting the engine with the Guhl programming and a fuel mapping add-on, then perhaps there is a performance increase but also it seems only with an air intake mod as well.

Just curious and wondering. The look is kind of growing on me but I must confess, I find the size looks a bit out of balance with the retro nature of the bike. It certainly sounds better to me now with the silencer insert installed, but I find I am still trying to come to terms with the look and sound. Also, at what mileage should I send it in for repacking?

I'm not sure what the draw is to it; I personally find it a bit "sportbikey" for our bikes. The good options, IMO, are the Arrow and Staintune (RIP) exhausts that emulate the stock exhaust, just smaller.

I would love to have a Staintune exhaust, but they went out of business and doesn't seem they were too popular on our bikes to begin with so few options for a used one. The Arrow is still made and sold as far as I can tell.

If you decide you HAVE to go back to stock I have a complete stock system for sale with only 2 miles on it. It was removed from a brand new bike and that was the milage when I got it. $600 plus shipping. I have it listed on eBay right now.

I agree, not a fan of how they look. Many of my fiends have the same yoshi on their super sports and it just doesn't look right on our retro bikes. IMO

I am going to be getting the black Mizuno full exhaust from japan this season. I only wish the muffler was half the length. I like short simple exhausts.

When I bought my 2013 a few years back, it too came with the Chrome version of the pipe you have. It sounds great, even better with the baffle out, but the stock pipe, which the seller gave me in a box. looks just as big and out of sync with the bike to me. I thought about buying a slimmer muffler, but I have spent way too much money on motorcycles the last 2 years, and have held back replacing the Yoshimura muffler. It has kind of grown on me, but I like the exhaust pipes on the DLX and EX much better. Seems they were designed to flow with the lines of the bike, not that big, hunky muffler that came on the 2013 and 2014 Black CB's. So I will stay with my pipe, and keep the OEM muffler in case I ever sell it. P.S...I have never seen this pipe with Carbon Fiber either, but I do not believe it does anything for performance, and I have never liked the looks of Carbon Fiber either, especially on helmets, yuk......

Getting rid of the stock muffler for ANY better flowing muffler will absolutely make a good amount more power. That is one of the biggest corks on the bike. Next up is the cat.

When I got my 2014, I swapped the stock exhaust pipe for the polished RS-3 slip-on, and agree that IMHO, neither option really complements the retro looks of the CB. While the Arrow looks pretty good, I personally didn't really like any of the choices available for the CB, so I had one custom made.

I can confirm that the RS-3 did sound much better than stock did, and it is also way lighter. But both are huge, and I think mess up the lines of the bike. I also agree that the RS-3 looks more at home on a 90's superbike than the CB. Just my opinion.

For me I have always loved the Air Cooled Inline 4 with the Yoshimura full pipe. I always wanted a Honda 4 with the pipe. I was looking at getting a CB350 4 and there are a few fabricators out there that made pipes that are close to the vintage Yoshimura Pipes. But this 2014 bike kind of dropped in my lap for a price I could not refuse. The very next thing I did before I even got the bike was to order the Yoshimura Full Exhaust.

For me a Honda 4 and Yoshimura Pipe is like Peanut Butter and Jelly... Burger & Fries... Beer & Pizza! I think you get the idea!

Did you ever sell your stock pipes?
