Top box and rack

We know our racks won’t fit certain years. You have to, for instance, select the Honda rack for your year model. Or whatever rack brand you chose.

If you look at samurider, be aware most items show out of stock. But, Mr. T doesn’t really stock stuff. He will acquire it and ship fast.

I have never experienced a failure with a Givi or Givi-compatible Monokey supported product. The adapter interface seems to be robust enough for daily tarmac and packed dirt road use at air ambient temperatures of -25C to over 40C (freeway and urban crap).

For reference, here's my CB with the Monokey V47 top case. The larger, and less looks-appropriate case for my bike. But, very practical and can hold all I need for my weekend job (shoes, uniform, food, utility stuff) . I've had this box for almost ten years, and it's been very reliable.

It did suffer a crack in one of the trim pieces caused by my ill-mannered attempt to close it when it was overstuffed, and Givi sent a replacement piece without hesitation.

On my 2017EX, I used the factory Honda Rack beacause it was as low as possible, and level with the ground. Since I usually don't carry the top case on it, I used the smallest mounting plate, from SW Motech (made for their Alu-rack) at only $30, and bolted it on permanently. Yes, I drilled holes in the metal rack. I took off the

I mounted the case and adapter as far forward as possible, as there was still plenty of passenger space. I have to take the case off to access the seat, which I seldom do, but would rather have the weight as far forward and as low as possible. I also took of the stock passenger grab bars, as the rack would serve that purpose now.

I have a 2017 EX with the Honda Rear Chrome Rack, chrome engine guards, and a Puig clear windshield.
Below picture is how the OEM rack ‘sits’.
* My US model longer-taillight chrome housing protrudes “out” farther than euro model, I read.
And now looking at Pekingducks’ tailight chrome housing, (above picture) his appears to have the shorter model …. go figure.

Wow, sent the trim for free? I have a light kit on mine and after a year one side light went out (one LED shorted and blew the surface mounted fuse on the card). They wouldn’t even sell me the one light I needed. Had to buy a whole new kit. I still like their stuff.

Yes. Actually, Givi has been pretty generous with me... to a fault.
On my R1200R, a crack developed in the rack after repeated vibration from riding. They had updated the design and send me a new rack and a Monokey mount plate. They sent me a new trim piece for my V47 too.

However, I had purchased the rack for my Bonneville from a Non-U.S. vendor since the price with shipping was a deal at the time. The chrome on it was sub-par, and when I complained to Givi's U.S. division, they wouldn't help because I hadn't purchased from a U.S. dealer. Their Italian division pretty much ignored my attempts to get help.

As for their LED kits, I find lights mounted in the box to be a bit fiddly. I have mounted LED brake light strips to the rear of my Monokey plates on all three of my bikes. No wiring or fussiness in my boxes, and I have the auxiliary brake lights whether a box is mounted or not. Plus the E36 box is one of their older styles, and doesn't have the fake brake lights. It just looks like an old-school hard suitcase.

I agree about the Givi lights being fiddly. Their lid contact switches gave me so many problems I cut the switch out and hardwired the lights. Strangely, the contact switch on the mount, to the bottom of the box has never been a problem and allows me to remove/replace the box easily, like it was designed to be.

PB has the same box and may have hardwired his too. Not sure. I did send him some pics of mine.

I can’t remember the model I have, but it has the fake brake lights. I bought the Givi light kit for it, from Givi USA and still got nothing when one burned out but you have to buy a new whole kit. So I did.

Still like the box and I like the big Givi on the ST 1300 which came with the lights installed from the factory,

On my V40 and V47 boxes, I cut Scotchlite reflective tape to the pattern of the little bits of chromed cardboard that they stick inside the taillight "lenses" and put them in their place, so at least the lenses act as reflectors.

While very practical, the V40 looks like I have a Weber charcoal grill with taillights on the back of my bike, and the V47 looks like I'm towing a mid 2000s Acura. They get the job done, but for simple daily use, the smaller, plainer E36 is my go-to box. It's nice to have any of the three boxes ready to pop in place depending on how much stuff I need to carry.

Honestly, though, I could really just do with the E36 and the V47, and should probably sell my V40 (hint hint, if anyone's looking)
