Broken down on Kenosha Pass
#11
Gotta love the anti theft crap they are sticking on bike these days. I had a 2014 Can Am Spyder RT Limited. It has a system called DESS. It's supposed to read the key before allowing the thing to start. It works great until it doesn't. Of course you never know when it decides to not start. This was one of the reason I sold it and bought the CB. Just keep it simple.

Someone will mention that Honda has the HISS, but we didn't get it in the US.

I don't really get the point of an immobilizer on bikes. I mean realistically, if someone wants the bike, but cant start it, you just need a few big guys and a pickup truck or van to pick it up and haul it away in about 2 minutes. It's good for target of opportunity type stuff, but other than that I'd rather do without it (and the possibility of it failing) and just have a normal ignition and my own theft precautions.

Well, it turned out to be a comedy of errors. Mostly mine.

The bike was in neutral while I was attempting to restart it on Kenosha Pass, but to no avail. Little did I know but it wasn't really in neutral -- it was between gears. The bike easily rolled back and forth (and up the ramp into the pickup truck), but not until I pushed it around my quiet garage this evening did I hear the "click click click click" of the gearbox. I knew immediately it was in false neutral. I clicked it into neutral, turned the key, and it started right up. Huge relief.

I then tried starting it in gear with the clutch pulled in. Nothing. After a few minutes of poking around, it was obvious the clutch lever wasn't contacting the interlock switch on the perch. A quick adjustment and it was as good as new. Now the bike starts fine, in neutral or in any gear with the clutch pulled in. Just like a Honda.

Duh, why didn't I notice the neutral light wasn't on when I was stranded?

Glad it was nothing after all.

My son was over for dinner tonight. I was telling him about your issue being 45 miles from home and said I told you about his 50 mile rule. He said I misunderstood him about the 50 miles... that was round trip, and if you had followed that recommendation you'd have been home with 5 miles to spare lol.

He actually said it hasn't been giving him any grief lately and he will turn over 10,000 miles pretty soon, although he still sticks close to home when riding it.

Great news! Glad it wasn't something more..."European-ly priced". Big Grin

I had a '95 Ducati 900SS/CR. Really wanted a 916, but having a young family put that out of reach. Surprise Christmas present from my late wife. Doubly dear to me due to that. Had it until about a year ago when I finally gave in to the fact that I just couldn't get comfortable on it anymore, and it was too wonderful a machine to just languish in my garage.
Loved that bike. Never even hiccupped, but for a leaky hydraulic clutch line that I had to bleed every few weeks up toward the end of our "relationship".
