It was fun getting the old girl running. All it cost was about $450 in parts.
I have put 300 miles on it in the last two weeks. I am going to ask an oil question. Do I need my head examined?

I want to change the oil. I have straight 30 non detergent in it now. My riding buds say use a good motorcycle 10w30 or 10w40. Would this be OK?
The 1964 owners manual says SAE 30 non detergent. But detergent oil is better than it was in 1964. What should I do???

1960s air cooled engine technology was such that fit tolerances between pistons and cylinders were a bit loose and engines burned some oil by design. Burning a detergent oil left ashy deposits that accumulated in the cylinder and eventually resulted in hot spots (which could cause pre-ignition knocking).

The reason I know anything about this is because air cooled aircraft engines have the same issue (most having been designed in the same era). Aircraft engines still don't use detergent oils for that reason. They use oils with an ashless dispersant that suspends contaminants in the oil, but doesn't leave ash deposits when burned.

I'd probably stick with the non-detergent oil that you're currently using. While the detergent packages in oil have certainly improved over the years, modern oils are designed for engines that burn little to no oil.

I need to run something past you guys again. On another forum, the experts said my valves were to loud. I have them adjusted to .004 which is what Honda wants. I made a new vid tell me what you guys think are they to loud?

This guy is a decent shade tree mechanic (wink wink). Over coffee the other day he said they were not to loud but maybe some cam chain noise? I took the cam chain tensioner apart and it looked good.
