XR seating vs CB1100

W/R: The seating on a bone stock XR1200 is pretty neutral. I'm 6 foot exactly and find the stock seat comfortable. Longest day ride I've done is 260 miles. Additional seating options are available but somewhat limited. Corbin makes a seat pad replacement and one or two manufacturers do as well. The seat itself is kind of like a café seat meaning you really can't move back to stretch your legs out. Again, I seem to fit just right at 6 foot and don't find that an issue. All 3 of my bikes have café seats and I'm happy with that. I do have the tendency to slide forward just a little (since the seat surface is somewhat slick) on occasions when braking hard.

Bottom line: Seating position is a lot like the CB except you feel like you're sitting a little lower (more like IN) the XR.

Another owner I converse with likens the XR riding position to riding a big, old school enduro/dirt bike.

XR's are relatively rare. The feet forward crowd never warmed up to them and as a result they went by the way after only 2-3 years on the market. I've put 10K miles on mine since last year and really like it. Not the fastest or the lightest bike around but a unique style and riding experience with lots of low end grunt.

I'm eventually looking to put a belly pan on it like the one in the pic below.



Side note: I know of one person that was recently looking at an 2009 XR with approx. 12 K miles (I think) in orange for $5200.

Thanks a lot Frulk. Looking at the bars it appears that if anything there may be slightly less forward lean? That is my biggest worry, too much forward lean.

I remember when HD released the XR1200 in Europe, all the HD fans in North America screamed that they wanted it too so HD brought it NA...... and it sold like crap. I loved the bike but at the time I couldn't afford two bikes so I stayed with my Night Train.

The XR that I'm looking at is about the same, 17000km but he wants a little too much for it. Funny, I found one a couple of months ago but the guy wanted more than the new price for it with 27000km.

Yes, with stock bars the seating position for me is just a hair more upright than the CB's.

Hmm, looking at your examples (and others across Canada) it seems his isn't entirely exorbitant - he is asking $8500 ($6600USD). It looks fairly mint in the pictures, the only aftermarket I see is a D&D 2-1 pipe but the original comes with it.

I'm just waiting for him to call me back now.

Thanks a lot Frulk, you have provided the info I need. I have a sneaking suspicion the XR1200 will be gracing my garage with its presence very soon, that also means either the Ulysses or CB1100 will have to go on the block. I don't have any extra room and I have sort of self imposed limit of 3 street bikes at a time.

I'm going to check out the XR1200 tomorrow, if it's as nice as he says it is I will be riding it home.

I think if I re-Tetris my garage I can make everything fit, it would be shame to sell one of these beautiful bikes.

Well, I'm a little disappointed - I had to pass on the XR1200. It was in excellent condition, the after market exhaust wasn't too loud for me, it worked as good as I expected it too (I wasn't expecting a rocket ship), even the seat was comfortable enough but my knees were bent far too much.

I knew the XR1200 had an increased lean angle over conventional Sportsters but I hadn't realized that they partially achieved this by moving the foot pegs up and back slightly. There is no way my surgically repaired knees could stay bent like that for long.

I guess I'll have to switch my search to a Nightster. I just really want a Sportster.

ah been wondering how this was going to turn out. Couldn't you get a set of mid mount pegs for it? my buddy did that to a Sportster 1200 a few years ago. Longer shocks, midmount pegs made it a pretty comfortable ride.
