The Undecider's Other Motorcycle Madness
#1
There might be a couple of y'all that remember me. I haven't been active here since late 2018 when I had recently sold my CB1100. The entire time I owned that bike, I struggled whether I should continue to own a bike I wasn't comfortable riding. Well, I finally parted ways in August 2018 when I traded my beloved CB for a new 2017 Yamaha FZ09. I had just sold my Grom, as well, so I found myself down to only 2 bikes (my Africa Twin DCT and that FZ).

The FZ was incredibly fun to ride, but the moment I bought it, I had a slight bit of regret. The FZ's big brother, the new Tracer 900 GT was recently introduced and was a bike I really wanted to get my hands on. Given my lack of off-road use of my Africa Twin, a more sport touring oriented bike made more sense. It was a bit of a moot point, though, because the Tracer GTs were very hard to get.

Over the next couple months, I found myself missing my retro ride. I didn't miss the CB specifically, just missed having a classic looking bike to ride and look at. Opportunity knocked and I found myself a deal on a brand new, 2015 Yamaha SR400 in Oct. 2018. It was unsold inventory at the dealer where I worked at the time and the owner was selling the dealer to retire. Old age inventory such as that was going to be treated like wholesale used inventory in terms of what the new owners would pay for it. So, I talked the owner into selling it to me between used wholesale and used retail value.

The very next month (Nov 2018), we got a new Tracer 900 GT in. I traded my Africa Twin and FZ09 in on it. Took a bath on that FZ, but I didn't care. I wanted it that much. This has been one of the best motorcycle purchases I have made.

By early spring 2019, I had grown tired of the SR400. It was just too small for me to ride comfortably which is funny to say having owned a Grom. I sold that bike and got most my money back out of it. I sat on that cash for a couple of weeks looking around for the next buy.

The dual sport bug had been biting me pretty hard. I had missed attending a friend's annual spring break camping/dirt bike riding trip in 2019 and vowed I would not miss it the following year. So, part of my commitment to that was to buy a dual sport bike. Ended up finding a well priced 2015 Honda XR650L two hours from me and went and picked that up back in May 2019

It was right about May 2019 that we finally started getting more inventory of Honda Monkeys and I probably would have used my pocket of cash to buy one of those had I not just spent it on the XR650L. Well, within a couple months I had a new Monkey anyway.

Fast forward to November 2019, I found yet another bike. Having really enjoyed the Monkey, I figured another retro style mini street bike was in order. We took a 2018 Kymco Spade 150 on trade and I talked my sales manager into letting me buy that. I never intended to keep it long, but I had a lot of fun riding it. It actually far outperforms the Honda 125 minibikes because it makes 50% more HP and has another cog in the transmission. It legitimately hits 70 mph with a big dude like me on it. Ended up selling it in Feb for a small profit.

In January, I picked up another bike, this time a little project. My neighbor down the street had a Kawasaki Super Sherpa just sitting and rotting in her garage. I struck up a conversation with her about it bought it for a song. The next couple months, I spent too much money getting it running and riding right, but it turned out to be a very nice little dual sport. So nice, I decided I would probably sell my XR650L after my camping trip in March. I wanted to take 2 bikes to the campout so my dad had something to ride.

At the end of February, I decided I didn't want to keep the 650L, but still wanted a nicer, newer, fuel injected dual sport. Went full stupid and pulled the trigger on a new CRF450L and traded off the 650L.

To end this story, I ended up getting a new job and quitting the dealer. I went on my camping trip and then Covid-19 hit. I now own the Tracer GT, Monkey, CRF450L, and Super Sherpa. For the first time in years, I am not thinking about which bike is my next bike. The World is too crazy to think about that and I am incredibly lucky to have started the new job I have now right when this craziness hit.

That made my head spin. If I owned that many bikes in such a short period, every time I went to the garage, I'd be sure I was in someone else's because I wouldn't recognise them. Actually, that's not true. I'd be dead. My wife would kill me.

By the way, good to hear from you Undecider. Do stick around.

Hey UN good to hear from you. Man, you've been going through em lol. Good stable now though. I like those Super Sherpas. Kind of rare.

That’s a great story! I’ve vacillated between 4 bikes and 7 bikes for several years now and can totally relate to your restlessness. I think for now, I’m happy with what I’ve got, though I’m admittedly having a tough time resisting the siren song that is the new 2020 W800 (the shiny red one, not the Cafe).

I might have to do a little piece on the Super Sherpa. It has surprised the heck out of me how good of a little bike it is.

I think I am going to update this thread with photos of all the bikes I have owned. Finally tracked all the photos down after a couple days of searching.
This shows my first two motorized things. There is a Honda ATC70 hiding behind me sitting on my XR75. The ATC was ridden from age 8-10, XR was 10-14.

My next bike was a 1978 Honda XL175. That is what I first rode on the street when I got my license at 15. Had that from age 14-16.

I got this 1989 Kawasaki KLR250 shortly after I turned 16 and had that the rest of high school.

This 1991 KLR650 was the last bike my dad bought me my freshman year of college. Rode that thing all the way until I was 25.

My first job out of grad school was at a motorcycle dealership (thanks recession) and I had my heart set on a new Suzuki V-strom 1000. Somehow ended up with a 2005 Yamaha FJR1300. I think riding my dad's Concours 1000 made me want a sport touring bike. Rode this a couple years and traded it in 2009.

to be continued...
Decided I wanted to go the ADV bike route and my research concluded the Suzuki DL650 was the way to go, so picked up a clean 2006 model. I rode that bike quite a bit and even took a couple trips on it, but a change in lifestyle brought me to sell it because I was spending more time cycling. That was spring 2014.

It was about 3 months before I realized I had lost my mind and ended up with a new to me 2013 CB1100. I had lusted for this bike, but could not afford a new one. I could swing a good deal on a used one, though.

A few months later, I found myself really wanting one of those new Honda Groms that had just come out. I went to look at them and instead found a really cheap used supermoto. This 2009 Kawasaki KLX250SF came home with me, but only a few months. It was fun, but I just didn't care much for it.

Another few months went by and in early 2015, I decided I missed having a bike that could carry stuff and had decent wind protection. After thinking about what I would like to own at a reasonable price, relatively light weight, and comfortable I landed on another DL650, this time a 2013 model.

In early 2016, I started a new job at a motorcycle dealership despite swearing I would never go back to work for one again. That proved to be bad for my bank account as you will see. The first such purchase was a 2011 BMW R1200GS.

That Beemer was quickly followed up the same month (April 2016) with a Grom that I ended up modifying to a degree where the mods cost more than the bike. I won't repeat what I wrote in my first post of this thread about the chronology. No need to repeat...

I managed to make it to the following year before buying my next bike, the Kawasaki version of the Grom, affectionately known as the Gromasaki. Only reason I got this was because I put it in my office at work and fell in love with the paint scheme. It was a cool little bike, but I preferred my Grom and sold it a few months later.

A few more months passed, I think it was April 2017 I brought the Africa Twin home. Basically, I tried out the DCT version and had to have one. I would have another one now that they are putting cruise control on them.

Then came the FZ09 in Aug 2018

And the SR400 in Oct 2018

The Tracer 900GT the very next month:

This 2015 XR650L was added to the stable in May 2019

July 2019 meant Monkey Business

Nov 2019 the Kymco Spade

Finally, the Super Sherpa in Jan 2020 and the CRF450L in March

It is probably cheaper to change bikes that often than changing wife's !
A state trooper riding buddy had 4 wife's and now is very poor living in an old trailer
