"What bike would you most like for touring?".
I guess I'm lucky in the sense that the bike that would fit the bill for me is currently one I have in my inventory. A 2005 HD Road King. Most comfortable long distance hauler I've ever ridden. Adjustable rear air suspension. Enough on-board space to haul the kitchen sink and then some. All day comfort at 80-85mph. 200+ miles on a tank. Enough foot/leg position options to keep a 6 foot 5 inch yoga instructor happy.
I don't drink the HD Kool Aid. I wasn't in the market for an HD cruiser. I don't ride in large groups or hang out at bars. It fell in my lap due to a friend selling it at a ridiculous price. I replaced the aftermarket cans with the stock ones that came along with it and the bike is quieter than a lot of unmodded bikes on the road.
It's fired up every time I twisted the key. I've put approx 15K trouble free miles on it so far. No parts have fallen off or any of my fillings have rattled out. No oil leaks. It has the best motorcycle dealership network (BAR NONE) in the country backing it up should I ever require anything.
I like all bikes but not all riders. Haters gonna hate Billie. Let it go. It's the way of the world. I'm happy riding.....whether its on my CB or on a Harley.

My answer: the one I want to associate the trip memories with. I'm not trying to be witty here, that's the bottom line for me. Brand, type, practicality or street cred, all unimportant. It's a bonding thing. Someone once said that the trips are those made on unsuitable bikes, as those creates the richest adventures. I believe that too, but the bike I take on my long trip is simply the one I like most. I'm not really bothered by poor range, bad ergos, nonexistent rack or other things usually weighted in.

Beautiful King! Mine was also black with the whitewalls.
IMHO one of the most beautiful bikes on the road.
Glad you're liking it.
Oh and love Utah, been thru Moab and the area a couple times.

I tend to gravitate towards off-beat bikes that you don't see every day for whatever reason, but when it comes to practical, comfortable, go-anywhere, easily loaded up capability I'd find it hard to beat the 1250GS. It's cliche, and made fun of by many (sort of like Frulk's Road King...) but I can't imagine a bike that fits me for long distances better than this.

I wonder if that fairing would fit my CB, or could be adapted?
