But is he really $2,000 ahead? A 3 model year older motorcycle will likely be worth at least $2,000 less. Having been repainted generally lowers value on a motorcycle like that. And a final edition might not depreciate as much as a regular Thruxton.
depends if you buy for resale, or usage TBH.

FWIW a motorcycle i buy represents money on fire. It has no value. Its life ends either at mechanical failure or a viking funeral riding off a cliff. several times in my life I have been lucky enough to trade in a bike for another bike, and each time the value of what I own has decreased significantly. that's the game. I don't deal in classics or restorations or anything like that, so value is a moot point to me.
when you consider how many miles i'm going to put on this triumph, there's no way it's going to have any value at all in about 5 years. Just like my CB, which is a beautiful and well cared for motorcycle. If i tried to trade it in i know i would struggle to get 2k for it. That's why i'm keeping it. A Bike ridden has more value than a bike traded.

I wanted a W800 and bought the cafe version (brown) because it was cheap. It was fun for a year, but what I really wanted was the blue standard one. An incredible deal came up for a used 2022 W800, only $5k with 300 miles on it ...but red. I just about bought it; again, because it was just such a good price and not because I wanted a red one. I passed on it, and then I found a new left over blue w800 heavily discounted at $7k. I could have saved 2 grand with that red. But I couldn't get it out of my head--I didn't want a red one. Very happy with the blue.
that situation is definitely more similar to where I'm at. You had your W800. I have my CB. you don't **NEED** a new W800, you just had aspirations for the blue one with the more comfortable seating position. I don't need a new bike since the CB does everything I need it to do, I just have aspirations for this perfect BRG and gold pinstripe masterpiece. I have the time and the money to get what I truly want, for once in my life. the Black triumph is your Red W800 exactly.
I think what I'm buying is partially a bike, and partially the experience of acting with zero compromise toward a goal. It's funny how when we really do that we realize that we don't get to do that very often.
This is true for me as well.
What can I expect to get for a ten year old CB 1100 with 75,000 miles on it?
What can I expect to get for a 3 year old NC 750X with 42,000 miles on it?
Not much, I may as well ride the snot out of them and continue to get my money's worth

I see. I *always* have resale in the back of my mind when I calculate cost. But given your purchase model, if you want a Thruxton to ride buy the low mileage, used one because it'll be functionally the same. Try living with the black maybe it'll grow on you? If not, do like Mike suggested and just have it repainted.

It's fun to read all these comments...makes me feel that I'm more normal than I thought I was regarding bike purchases.
There's a good deal of sound input regarding the less expensive, black one.
But then I go back to Mr. P's original post:

That's right....this dealer is getting exactly ONE. And it's going to be mine... I've never owned a bike this nice and it's fully double the cost of the most expensive motorcycle I've ever bought.
I don't think the CB is going to go away because it costs me nothing to own and gains me almost nothing in trade, but hooooo boy don't blame me if I show up to next year's rally in green....

no kidding....that's just a picture too. I posted a video i found (i think back on page 3 or 4 of this thread?) of a live bike actually sitting under the showroom lights and it's 10x more beautiful than the picture.

Visually stunning, probably rides even better than it looks.

Very nice bike! When I ETS'ed out the army in 1971, from Ft. Eustis, VA, I drove my car home to CA, but made some stops along the way, one of which was at my army bud's parents house in Owasso, MI. When we were in Thailand together, we would go to the beach resort town of Pattaya and rent Honda 350's. We'd ride 'em like we stole 'em, and those Hondas never missed a beat. At his house, his whole family rode, and he and I rode his brand new 1971 Triumph Bonneville two up on a trip around Lake Superior. It took nine days. Then I drove my car from MI, while he rode the bike, to TX, to visit another bud of ours. We left my car at his sister's house whose husband was in the army and stationed at Ft. Hood. We again rode two-up, me driving, from Ft. Hood down to Corpus Christie to visit another bud, then rode back to Ft. Hood, again me driving. I'm still in touch with my friend, and he's coming to TX to visit me this summer. We'll ride my Honda CB1100 and my Yamaha V-star 1300 around TX.

Now that is a very cool prize. I'm signed up for the DGR here in Orange County. Sadly, the Triumph/Enfield/Guzzi dealer here that has hosted it for the past few years closed in September, and this year's ride will be hosted at a swanky private car storage facility.
The other big Triumph dealership near here has pledged to kick in one of the new Speed 400 bikes to the top earner. That would be very cool too, but The Last Edition Thruxton... that would indeed be awesome.
