How To do your own 600 mile service
Well I can see how that is confusing to people. Way back when I was a youngster I worked part-time pumping gas at the local gas station (1973). A older gentlemen pulls in with this huge 1969 Cadillac on a Friday evening. I lifted the hood, checked the dip stick and was it ugly thick gunk, not oil in the traditional sense. I ask him when was the last time he had the oil and filter changed? He says never needs changing as manual says front end is lubrication free for 50,000 miles. He pulls out the manual and shows me. I pointed out the front end being referenced was the ball joints and steering components. Just goes to show you how people can misunderstand when reading. And the old saying the only problem with common sense is that it is not all that common.

Remember when car manuals all said to only change the filter at every other oil change?

Yes, well dad taught me differently, and he knew little about cars. His thought is why leave a qt or dirty oil in the engine, for small money. His cars did last forever to the dislike of mom. Except for the 65 Chevy impala were the power steering hose ruptured driving back on vacation and the car caught on fire. Still remember standing a far bit back and seeing it go up in flames on the interstate in Indiana. We were 90 miles from home, heck of a taxi ride to end the vacation. Did get all new clothes and shoes except for what I was wearing!

Last month bought a new 13 model, that the dealer still has in a crate. The build date was 3/13, so been sitting for almost a year and a half.

From another thread I read they come from the factory with oil. However, with this time interval, should I change the oil now? Only put 45 miles on it.

And I assume with reg Dino oil and not syn, assuming if the answer is yes.

I don't see why. The reason for changing the oil is that it's either dirty or worn out (usually both). If the bike was in the crate all that time, neither should apply.

Not to go off on an oil thread, but oil in the crankcase will accumulate some water if stored for the winter in climates where there are many freeze and thaw cycles while the bike is stored. I'm sure there's nothing like that in Louisiana, and as hot as our oil gets I'd think any water would be boiled off on a longish ride.

Jeez. Was that bike misplaced in storage somewhere or are they really selling that poorly? Or are a years worth of bikes all built around the same time and sent to a warehouse? Huh

I frequent a dealership in Marshall, Tx, in E. Texas. An old time dealer, the father has passed and left it (them) to his 2 sons. (They have stores in Marshall, Texarkana, and Palestine) Pretty good friends with both the sons, who run the stores. (very successful with these stores and multiple boat dealerships too)

My friend was not there - just grabbed a salesman. They didn't have a red DLX on the floor, nor did the other stores. Then he said -- we may have one in the warehouse in a crate -- they had a "card" on it, so we knew it was a 2013, but really took them a while to find it. Fun to go over to the warehouse to look for it - he finally found it and cut the cover off it to look it over.

We made a deal, a good one for me. (I wanted a 2014 DLX, but the price was really good on this 2013)

When serviced out, my friend, the co-owner was there -- he said - damn, ya'll found the bike I was hiding. We talked it over - he said I really didn't want to sell it, since I think they may not come out with a 2015, and wanted to keep a new one in the crate for 10 years....But agreed to honor the deal made and sell to me.

He said he loved the bikes, but Honda was doing a terrible job of marketing - said they could sell more if Honda would do a better job of it. (not sure Honda cares, but this dealer of course wants to sell bikes) Now he is like me, an older guy, who I suppose is the target market.

Very interesting.....

I have a question for you guys that bought your CBs new. When you got your bike new was the oil level correct in the window? The reason I ask is because I bought mine with a little over 1K on it and the dealership said they did the 600 mile service on it. Naturally, I figured that was a lie.

Long story short, this motorcycle was traded in with a little over 500 miles on it and the dealership owners grandson put another 500 plus on it and I can confirm this. The oil level window is totally full which makes me think maybe they did change the oil after all and got it slightly overfilled. I am just curious when they are new if the oil level falls between the upper and lower level in the window.

When my CB was new, oil level was a dog hair above the "high" line.

Mine was over the window new and is that way after oil changes. Recommended 4qts will put you slightly over the window. Get it warm, if it just creeps over the window your fine, if it fills the window instantly your high.
