But it most likely will only work on Honda oil filters -- which is OK for changing original factory filter. But the flutes on other aftermarket filters may well be different...

I just bought an aftermarket cap filter wrench from my local Honda dealer. It was the one they use and didn't seem to know anything about a genuine Honda cap filter wrench. It hasn't got here yet so I hope it works like they suggests it does. It was $5.75.

I've got a big pair of Channel Locks that will open wide enough to remove any oil filter easily.

I got the wrench I use from the discount auto parts place for a couple bucks. The Honda filter is the same filter that is used on most Japanese cars and bikes other than Suzuki which does require a special wrench. Even my Triumph Tiger used the same filter.

That's good to know. I may have to go that route when it's all said and done. The folks at the Honda dealer where I ordered mine (see post #22) had one of the mechanics come up to verify the item in the catalog that I was about to order. I may be wrong but I got the impression that I would not be able to return it since it was a special order.

Tried a strap wrench, which should have worked, but didn't for me. Thought I'd stop by the independent shop where I purchase my tires and have them mounted for additional suggestions. Bob D went into the shop and came back with a well-worn pair of these, identical to the tool in PowerDubs post, above.

After a couple of futile attempts, I thought I felt it budge just slightly. My imagination? Nope .... the filter had actually broken loose. 10 minutes later, there she was, with new filter, and fresh GN4 10w30.
All this frustration for one oil filter!

Before I got a filter tool this year I used an old garage trick. Hammer a screw driver right through the filter then turn. Messy but it works in a pinch.

Im a mechanical klutz. So, When, like Mao Zedong, I decided to take the great leap forward and change my own oil and filter, I went to my small town hardware store and bought an adjustable strap wrench. It looks like this:
It did an excellent job of loosening the filter and giving it just a little tightening tweak.
Then, on the great adventure when Pterodactyl's K&N filter sprang a leak, I decided to remove the K&N filter that had been put on my bike—I had weakened and got the mechanic to change the oil while he was checking the valve clearances. I did not have my trusty strap wrench with me 3,500 kms from home so I bought a new metal adjustable wrench ...

It works OK too, although I'm not persuaded it's any better than it's rubber mate.

All this frustration for one oil filter! Now, why would you use 10w30?
