I would assume the durability of our engines would tolerate a short very low oil level. Good job getting everything cleaned up.

you must have really crushed those two gaskets together, because I had the same problem today: the old gasket stayed on the bike and i didn't notice. when I cranked it oil shot out like a freaking fountain! there was no mistaking that something was very wrong. fortunately I had recently read your post and it occurred to me that was what happened. So thank you for posting.

If you wipe off the case after draining oil, you will never leave a second gasket on the engine case

Since the CB has a oil cooler and oil remains in it, he most likely had over a quart left in the engine. It was fairly brief in duration so it most likely did not do any major damage. I would replace the rear brake pads.

Really glad to hear everything looks ok. Funny how I have learned so many lessons like that the hard way as well. Never had that happen on a motorcycle but just recently on a Chevy 5.3 I used an expensive K&N filter as Autozone was running a special and a day later I saw more than a small puddle under the truck. Changed to a cheap Fram filter and no more leaks. I usually tighten the filters very tight but maybe I was feeling weak or the gasket got crimped somehow and I just took it for granted everything was ok. I always try to put a clean piece of cardboard under a car or truck after changing the oil just to try and be safe. After a friend of mine forgot to tighten the drain plug and the engine seized I have been extremely paranoid about oil leaks. Thanks for sharing.
I have to say I think it is great that people can share their stories on this forum and receive so much positive feed back. I think it is inevitable as we work on our bikes things are going to happen from time to time, especially with all the distractions which seem to come up at the wrong time. I always use lock tite on brake bolts now as I have heard too many horror stories of bolts coming lose but then last winter I reassembled some cards on a Honda SL350 and forgot to put one of the main jets back in. That thing is kick start only and of course I didn't see the jet on the work bench until after working up a good sweat, good lord.
