My other hobby is old Cub Cadet tractors. I'm a moderator for a Cub site and you have no idea how many fuel related problems we see. The older stuff was never built for ethanol and it eats fuel lines and carbs. For what ever it's worth I do not use gas with ethanol in any of my small engines. What I do is to go to the station and fill my race jugs with 89 no ethanol. I'd use a higher octane but that's all I can get in my area. Then I fill the bike at home. If I need to gas up on the road I try to only add just what I need to get home. I have some gas that has been in a leaf blower now for over a year and it starts on the 2nd pull. I don't use a stabilizer. If you can't find no ethanol in your area and you are planning on storing for the winter look for a race fuel dealer, expensive but you should be able to get a 5 gal can just to fill the tank for winter. Also a good idea to start it every couple weeks.

Very good article. I'm fortunate to have a station nearby that sells only ethanol free fuel at about 50 cents a gallon over the going ethanol-gas rate.

Great article. I read it a couple of weeks ago. I meant to post it, so thanks for doing so.

One thing that I noticed, though, was that most of the bikes mentioned are several years old; makes me wonder if newer bikes and their related parts are more ethanol-forgiving. I have had no problem to date with the 10% ethanol I pretty much have to use here, but I think I may start using the fuel stabilizer recommended as it seems like it would solve most of the potential problems without any real downside risk. If I do that, then wouldn't some of the more draconian fixes like swapping hoses be unnecessary?

This one was built in March of 62. That looks more like ours, I recall the "International" brand. We had a couple JD tractors, too, and a Ford F100 Twin I-Beam with 6-cylinder, four on the floor. Hauled a lot of hay in that thing.
