The left one has a dowel pin at the lower front. Be sure you take the small 3-bolt cover off first, take the shaft out and slide the gear out. This will give a nice spot to tug from. On the right side, pull the oil filler cap and the center plug out to tug from. The smaller cover has 2 dowel pins, the clutch cover has none. Tap with a plastic or rubber hammer if needed.

here's a pic of the left cover removed if that helps;
When it's time to put it back together think about how much sealant to apply and how much of it you want to block small oil passages if any gets loose and sloshes around in the engine......

Max: Thanks for sharing that inner shot. Useful to everyone on the Forum - maybe at some point. Doesn't look like a seal is too critical on this cover. Just enough to keep the climate out?

Cheers G.O., that's what i thought too but on closer inspection you can see some very clean oil that settled in the low parts of the cover, the "sprague clutch" on the crank shaft and gears all need sufficient oil to be functional in the long run so i think it "drizzles oil" inside that cover, (to keep it in the climatic sphere ).
on a side note you eloquently explained the hidden failure with these new techno-bits we buy these days; "Just a bit of clarity, the LED substrate rarely fails and I have yet to hear about one that did. More commonly the power electronics fails. This can happen due to sub par electronic components (e.g. capacitors from strange nations), or heat fatigue. This point is moot to the rider because the light subassembly still fails." Completely agree! Ferret for honest disclosure i stole the picture from somewhere and i attempt to take apart factory assembled parts only as a last resort and in the knowledge that i can guarantee a positive improvement, just happy to help.

There is definitely plenty of oil under the alternator cover migrating from the crankcase sump area. Any oil that gets on the crank-mounted rotor whips outward with force and would definitely find its way past a less than sturdy seal.
If you've ever started the engine with the oil filler cap off you would attest to that. And don't forget to put sealant all around the alternator wire grommet, not just the gasket surface. |
